Actual FIX for most people's stuttering problem!
This won't help people who don't have that option but it will give them an idea.

!!! DISABLE GSYNC/FREESYNC !!!

Don't ask questions, just disable any kind of Variable Refresh Rate you got going on. Force your monitor to be !60hz! (even if you have 300+hz) and cap your ingame fps to !65 FPS!

You can thank me later, this is the smoothest way you can play in the current state of the game. You should also completely disable or put on low ALL Cpu intensive settings. And I mean every single one, especially the real time reflections one, the game shows descriptions about which setting is Cpu intensive.

You should cap the game to 60 fps and have the monitor's refresh rate to a multiple of 60 (60/120/180) for best results.

I'm playing the game with a PS5 DS controller and the only way to eliminate pretty much all stuttering is to set my 1440p - 240hz monitor to 60hz, in-game limiter is set a 70 Fps and having Vsync set to on. I get a 100% locked 60hz experience that looks better and runs better than the PS5 version... This has eliminated the feeling of stuttering I was getting when panning the camera around with the flashlight on at higher frame-rates.

I have heard ps5 controllers help with stutters, coz the game after all was created for it. I play with xbox elite series 2, top of the line controller but still stutters on camera movements.

All performance issues aside. Has anyone ever just maxed out settings at 1440p or higher and see how the game looks in general? The game looks absolutely stunning especially on horse parts it's on par with Red Dead 2 if not even higher quality. As I get very close towards the end, the stuttering issues are almost completely gone. My experience second half of the game has been pretty much flawless. I think most people who complain (including me) have tested out only the first and second area and just give up. There is something very wrong in the first 2 areas for sure. 1st area is bad, 2nd is a nightmare to go through, very low fps, horrible stutters. But after that, it's quite alright.

Which area is the 2nd? Assuming the 1st is the prologue where Sarah dies?

Oh no so the third I guess. The rainy one is the worst performance.
Is there a big improvement in 1.0.5 ?

I tested the topic starter's suggestion on 1.5, so maybe they patched it, but I didn't notice any difference and went back to gsync.
But then again, there aren't that many statters now comparing to back on release, at least for me. The port is still far from okay, but at least it's playable now.

I'm not having any stutter whatsoever with G-Sync enabled. Game runs at 100+ fps and on a 144Hz G-Sync panel it does run and look really smooth.

The game isn't stuttering for me either but the camera does have a weird judder when I pan it with an uncapped framerate using G-SYNC on my 1440p monitor. It's like the game's camera movement is updating at a different rate to the refresh rate of the display caused it to look jerky when you pan the camera, even slowly.

I found that if I cap the game to 90 fps using RTSS that the camera motion then becomes perfectly smooth but only as long as the framerate remains locked at 90 fps. If the framerate drops then the camera motion again becomes jerky.

I don't believe that this is an issue with G-SYNC because during most normal gameplay when I am moving forward the camera feels perfectly fine even though the framerate itself is running between 75 and 115 fps (on the Ultra preset at 1440p).

*EDIT*
This is with an Xbox Elite V2 controller by the way. The game doesn't seem to have this weird camera issue if I pan with the mouse.

let me throw this graph i googled in here. this is the stutter.

https://blurbusters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/FrameDeliveryGraphic_Stuttering-1024x467.jpg

and this is tearing explained.

https://images.anandtech.com/doci/7582/Screen%20Shot%202013-12-12%20at%207.06.57%20AM.png

you need stable frame delivery to sync it to the panel.

Exactly as you explained, the same it did for me on my gsync 1440p panel. In other games though, such as RDR2 for instance, its all ok when I pan the camera and I am between 75-90 fps, its simply can "work" somehow with VRR, this game NOT! and it never be! I don't think they will ever fix it, so people wqith gsync or other VRR solutions will never utilize it for this game properly

I recently found out that it does the same thing even in Uncharded 4 and Lost Legacy. What a coincidence right? Only Naughty dog games. No other games does this, as you said Red dead 2 is flawless, even drops from 60 are unnoticeable with Gsync

I'm not capping my 144hz monitor to 65hz just for this game. Naughty Dog should learn how to properly develop and release a PC title. Maybe in another 4 weeks we might get a proper product.

Just what I think! Developers / publishers get a lot of money, so at least do a decent job.
If devs don't know how to program a PC game, just keep doing games for the consoles.
We, PC GAMERS, are expecting a LOT from a PC game!

So you expect a lot with potato hardware?
