I think 30 FPS actually feels more cinematic
When I first started playing this I was kinda bummed my PC couldn't hit 60 FPS. The further I progressed through the story though, the more engrossed I felt. More so than any other singleplayer experience. I think it was partly because 30 FPS is closer to 25 FPS which is what our brains perceive as cinematic when watching film. I decided to cap my framerate at 25 just to keep things consistent and lo and behold, my experience playing became far more immersive.

The reason nobody talks about this is because companies need to sell you on 60 FPS to keep making money. The fact of the matter is 25 FPS for story driven games is beneficial in some ways, and if you add the Letterbox filter to the game through Nvidia Freestyle it's like you're watching a TV show. I sometimes wonder if this is what Naughty Dog intended, as you also see the motion blur far easier with lower frames.

If you don't believe me, try it out yourself.

You leave film grain and motion blur on, don't you.
I usually don't mind film grain in many other titles but here the default 10 completely ruins the image.

Sounds disgusting. I will throw something heavy on my display if I have to play like this for 10 minutes.

I honsetly couldn't play it like that, but I admire everyone who can.

Turn it off then. I'm not a fan myself, so I have mine turned off.
Depth of Field, Motion Blur and Film Grain are always off for me.
Last time I used Motion Blur was in Aliens VS Predator. ^^

Depth of Field can be nice as it simulates the eyesight. If you focus on an object near, the background is not as clearly seen in your head as the near object you focus on.
If you focus on the background everything near is not as focused on.
But a some point, I just found that dynamic blurring annoying. ^^

Film Grain was always annoying to me.
It looks like the "snow" on old TVs, when you have bad analog connection to the transmitter.
I can bear it dynamically for specific occurences. Like in Black Mesa if you go near radioactive material you hear the Geiger-counter and have massive Film Grain.

You're not wrong.

The thing with DOF in video games is that it rarely ever works the way the eye does. For one thing, many times it doesn't refocus near as fast as human, well, my eyes do.

More importantly, the refocus depends on where you have the center of your vision pointed in games. It doesn't do that in real life. I don't have to turn my head or even eyes to refocus in real life, I just have to shift my mental focus, something that games obviously can't do. Well, yet.

So that's why I tend to keep it turned off unless I'm in photo mode, where it looks gorgeous.
I agree.
It was a nice gimmick at the start, but it doesn't really work as the eyesight works.
It's just some sort of (bad) simulation of that effect and therefore, I ended up turning it off in video games.

Godrays (sun / light beams) are the only thing that will never annoy me, as long as they are good implemented.
In The Forest you sometimes see them glowing through the ground (well that problem was also present in F76 IIRC ^^).
But as the sun moves, the issues fixes themselves mostly, still it's weird to see a sunbeam through the ground. XD

If a frame rate is consistent then you get used to it. It’s only when the frame rate fluctuates around is when you notice it.
really fighting for those clown awards
I always wished movies had higher fps

One of the reasons why I prefer gaming

The reason why i always push the fast forward button, feels much smoother. And, the movie is over faster. Needful time, to get back to the gaming pc.
My man I have a 4050 RTX and I always cap my games at 40 to 30 fps too lol. And yes I do leave film grain and motion blur on. I have a much more enjoyable and cinematic experience playing games on that framerate because it does put weight to the game. Ignore all the consumers in here hating on ya.
I appreciate your novel outlook about performance (especially for someone who is playing on PC). One thing I try to remember is the history of gaming, back in the 90s (before 3D accelerators hit the market), games ran entirely on the CPU and early game consoles like the original PlayStation and Sega Saturn could in some instances outperform games on PC running in DOS (like Tomb Raider). Even 30fps was not possible on PC in many cases (even with a Pentium), yet people still enjoyed the games back then.

The only thing that really matters is if you can enjoy the game, don’t listen to people who make you feel bad about your PC’s specifications. Gaming is supposed to be about playing games and enjoying the experience, not about how many frames per second your system can render or laughing at people with weaker systems.
Been playing high frame rates for years, but I capped at 30fps to prep for GTA 6. Took me two days to get used to it. Honestly, 30fps with motion blur feels super cinematic and way more immersive. Kinda wish I played all story modes like this. Crazy how much we let hardware hype shape our expectations.
