Nor do games implement crossfire anymore.
Only way this is handled now is by the OS due to the nature of DX12. So its up to the developers to do it but no one is really catering to this any longer. So this wont ever happen.
No it's not. You just need to know how to do it...you can mix vendors too.
Even though you must be in the RTX-generation to use it.
As GTX only supports SLI and it's not a very good setup.
Compared to NVLink (200 GB/s), SLI has a transfer limit of 2 GB/s, which is quite the bottleneck.
Additionally, SLI has a "master and slave"-relationship between the GPUs. Which means one cannot unleash its full potential at any time.
NVLink is based on mesh networking, so it uses bi-directional communitcation that each card can access the memory of the other.
However, it still doesn't mean that these GPUs can perfectly operate as one to get linear rendering speed.
Quick summary of this source:
https://irendering.net/should-you-use-nvlink-or-sli-or-multiple-gpus/
I've had personal experience with SLI since 2015 until 2020.
Was basically a waste, but a nice tryout. Some games worked pretty well with it others not.
With my current system I experience the least issues so far (I always try out older games that didn't run that well on my previous system).
So I may simply stick to one card, even though NVLink sounds quite promising.
