Naughty Dog literally admitted they had no idea what to do for a sequel to the first game and had even intended to make one without Ellie and Joel, but publisher (and likely fan) pressure had them revisit characters that didn't need to be revisited and there really was only one way for Joel's story to go.
It was a game Naughty Dog DID NOT WANT TO MAKE and it shows in the writing. Everybody was still giving it their all, but the writers struggled making something they had not intended to make.
While "woke" quickly became the pejorative of choice for any bigot with a list of age-old grievances against familiar targets, it also been adopted by people whose most important contribution to any discussion is, "You're not my mom!".
