You don't need to install a mod or cheat engine. Just the first part.
(and for the others - yes EAC could be called a "root-kit" even if it's stretching the definition. )
It has kernel level access, meaning if its code was compromised (unlikely but it has happened before) then every system running it is wide open.
Look at the case of mhyprot2.sys, a vulnerable anti-cheat driver for the popular role-playing game Genshin Impact. The driver is currently being abused by a ransomware actor to kill antivirus processes and services for mass-deploying ransomware. Security teams and defenders should note that mhyprot2.sys can be integrated into any malware.
Installing kernel level anti-cheats is trusting the software developers with everything your system has access to.
This is why a gaming PC should be nothing more than a gaming PC. Do all your work / banking etc on a secure system.
It may be extreme, but I would rather be seen as overly cautious than have everything compromised.
The point with DRM like this is that it allows random people to exploit it and gain access to your computer, and have all the privileges the DRM has - in this case - complete administrative control.. of everything.
It's happened before.
- Right click the game in your library, hover over Manage, click "Browse local files", then open the Game folder.
- Scroll down and look for "start_protected_game.exe" then change the extension from *.exe to *.old.
- Right click armoredcore6.exe, copy, paste, then rename the new copy file "start_protected_game.exe".
This should automatically kick you into Offline Mode. Just note that until EAC addresses the issue, you won't be able to download any custom AC codes.
Hope this helps!
