Flamethrowers are fantastic against mobs,
Their like Chain guns but with a better damage to ammo Ratio;

That said its not nearly as good as the Chainguns for building Stagger and will struggle against anything that can kill you.

Chainsaw is an AC shredder,
Don't think it works very well against bosses that will ignore the chainsaws Gripping animation.

Works against AC's best, Pile Bunker is still better against Non-AC bosses.

I don't think the flamethrowers are supposed to build stagger because they build ACS Anomaly instead. Which I believe inflicts a damage burst when it fills and might stagger as well.

I don't ever recall the Anomaly build having an substantial... change to playing with it,
That said, most things would die well before the Anomaly bar would fill up.
Including enemy AC's.

The Chainguns did the job of fatal damage faster than the Flamethrowers did
Each is situational, but spectactular within their niche.
flame thrower is just more annoying than anything it totally blocks your camera in pvp
Pure melee would be kick, a melee weapon, and a fist in the right hand. That's essentially the only option for pure melee. Use Basho arms for better melee damage. Keep in mind that the explosive thrower is not impacted by the Basho melee buff. Medium or heavy reverse joint legs seem to deal the most kick damage, unless I'm mistaken and the tetrapod does more.

The Bad Cook flamethrower utterly obliterates any non-armored MT that you get in range with after just a few ticks. Not so hot against armor or other ACs, but you can get away with dual wielding them to roast people if you have the mobility to 'stick' to the enemy.

The Chainsaw is weird but effective in that it has the single highest Direct Hit modifier in the game. Throw on some Basho arms and you will literally melt something with the charge attack. Granted, the charge attack is finnicky because you have to hold the chainsaw out long enough for it to start revving, but probably not too long to actually go into the 'shield' pose.
Chainsaw's charge attack has 2 unique properties that you have to feel to understand. Due to the "gripping" animation, it causes the target to enter a state of being damaged, which depending on the angle and enemy can make you miss most of the attack even if it connects. Try fighting Balteus, stagger him, and try to chainsaw from his right side; Balteus will flinch and angle his body sort of like he's going to roll-over, which moves him out of the hitbox of the chainsaw mid attack. Weird stuff like that can even happen on ACs. The second unique property is a lot more interesting: you can start charging the chainsaw during weapon swap. Pretty sure this comes from the weapon's ability to just be held out while charging, but you should try feeling it out for yourself. I suggest equipping a chaingun or other rapid fire weapon, and swap into the chainsaw; for me the action of holding the button down, to then holding the button down again is what clued me in to the chainsaw being weird like this. It should be noted that, even with the early charge up, the window to connect with a charged chainsaw attack is very strict.

Flamethrowers! They're super heavy in this game. They should be the fastest weapon to build the ACS error debuff, which causes defense reduction. On the receiving end, they also serve as visual obstruction. Unlike the chainsaw, I haven't touched them much.

A friend of mine runs a melee build: laser lance and unarmed, twinblade and triple laser cannon. Basho arms and Kikaku booster are highly suggested. He charges the laser cannon during the melee animation and uses it as a follow-up... He used a similar (the mentioned weapons are not available at the beginning of the game) build to clear the story mode; throwing in the unarmed punch attack can stunlock most enemies (including Balteus and Ibis) in the right build. I was pissed when it took me hours to beat IBIS only to watch him beat that fight in under a minute with zero issue. Over it now though, lol.

Regarding the Bad Cook:
It is instinctual for people to move away from from fire, so that's stand-off power against super close builds, even if its damage is not particularly effective.
The fire also pollutes your opponent's screen. It's hard to see your opponent and know what they're doing, and where you're going, when your screen is covered in fire.

These aren't really game mechanics, nor are they particularly strong. They're more like curve-balls that can throw opponents people off in PvP if they're not expecting it.
You know that mission to take down the redguns where you need to fight more than 60 MTs, several tetrapods and a boss in an AC?

Well, twin flamethrowers OBLITERATED the MT army.
Flamethrowers make easy work of the wheel enemies which was a god send when it came time to S rank Escort the Mining Ship.

The wheels are weak to explosives, and the Bad Cook is an Explosives weapon.
Just tried out the flamethrowers and they melted enemy MTs and ACs in NG+ chapter 5. I can recommend :)
Even ACs and other "real mechs" you'll encounter !
Flamethrowers powered me through NG++ like a breeze
