Better than a DLC but if we can have both why not.
I kinda fell in love with the characters and I think some could use some fleshing out. Dusty is an obvious favorite but to throw a curveball - Kate would be an interesting character to learn more about.
Kate is just ALLMIND remote controlling a robot. It's obvious from the get-go since it's an entirely ALLMIND-based AC. The point is to defray suspicion that ALLMIND can act independently, so she has no actual backstory of her own.
In fact, the game hints that both ALLMIND and Kate are aliases for C-Wave Mutation Seria, who was the originator of Dolmayan's religion and found the plans for Coral Release in the Institute. Then things make more sense - it's not that ALLMIND went rogue, but she wasn't emotionless to begin with and was just faking it until the opportunity arose. Her plan the entire time was pose as an AI to manipulate mercenaries to enact Coral Release.
The game doesn't say it directly, but drops a lot of subtle hints. Dolmayan's writings talk about how he met Seria, and she innocently encouraged him to take more Coral but he said he'd never allow it and got her realizing it was not true symbiosis, only exploitation. For Seria to disappear entirely from the lore after that would make mentioning it a bit odd.
When Dolmayan attacks you in alternate Xylem mission, ALLMIND enters Walter's direct channel to ask you to kill him (which is something Ayre also does when she meets you) and talks about how the Rubiconians are merely suppressing and exploiting the Coral. That is odd because it indicates she knows the Coral are living beings, she's also clearly angry about it.
Both Seria and Ayre use the connection with their human to push for symbiosis. They say two times is coincidence and three is a pattern... but I'm a gambling man and I think if there was a third Coral entity, it would also crave symbiosis.
What *are* you, Ayre? What are you really? A lost soul simply looking for a friend? An emissary for an alien people who cannot normally communicate with humanity? I'm not sure I believe either. I think the Coral Release Ending is ominous, creepy, and even nakedly malevolent. The most generous interpretation could look at that vast red starred sky and say "This seems like we made the wrong choice."
Dolmayan and O'Keeffe have the right of it. They both realize that these energy creatures are not to be trusted. The more I think about it, I start to see everything Ayre does/says in a new light. She manipulates 621 from the start. Always trying to guide us in a not-so-subtle way towards doing what she wants.
She's not just some innocent young girl who reached out and found friendship. She always had an agenda. Everything else is just camouflage. She is not our friend. She's a parasite. Every 'emotion' she expresses is nothing but mimicry. How could she even have emotions? She doesn't have a human brain with chemicals that produce different feelings.
Her final boss dialogue doesn't ring like tragedy to me anymore. As she expresses regret in how things turned out and dies saying she still believes we could achieve symbiosis, I hear the last ditch manipulation of a creature that wielded compassion as a weapon without ever really understanding what compassion actually was.
In the other hand, ALLMIND can always enter comms channel, as shown in mission briefings and debriefings, and there isn't a red effect like Ayre's channel when she do so.
Also, the wave mutations don't really care when people are using coral - ["Fear not," she said. "There will always be plenty."] according to Seria. ALLMIND however, have a different opinion on this herself, thinking this as an exploitation.
And Seria didn't care about Coral use at first because she had no notion that it was bad to sacrifice her siblings, but was told by Dolmayan it was morally wrong and learned that from him.
It's been a while that I've seen people having indept lore discussions on the STEAM forum of all places!
Sorry about the small interlude - please continue!
