Early game, beyond lock range line rifle charged shot will nuke an MT sniper.
Five minutes later, it is deflecting off of a security camera MT outside of lock range because ♥♥♥♥ you I guess.
Line rifles are super efficient on fodder across a mission. but once you are dealing with anything the game thinks "matters", or your fellow players, they are expensive rifles with more drain unless you pre-cook the charged shot for a guaranteed hit window. (and the AI can dodge cancel out of red flash attacks multiple times in a few seconds if you keep the pressure up, unlike a player)
80% of the line rifle charged shots hitting you in PvP are by someone shooting you in the ass while your camera was trying to track somebody hiding in the skybox. Or you were already staggered.
If you gotta cry zimmerbaby to defend a line rifle, you probably are garbage with line rifles, please stop using them and try a scudder for a while.
Curtis is good, but it isn't oppressive. It lacks the peak performance of many weapons, faltering in full auto vs assault rifles due to it's high recoil reducing accuracy. It falters against bigger targets due to it's need to stop and fire, and it's generally low rate of fire for charge shots, it falters against the burst rifle due to it's lower damage and it's limited number of charge shots due to heat generation.
There is always going to be a better option for any given scenario, but when you take into account how it handles everything reasonably well, it shines as a flexible weapon able to handle lower tier enemies very efficiently, while still providing high utility against bosses and elite enemies.
I actually like that weapon for a quad shotgun build. The SWEET SIXTEEN's reload time is way too long for my liking.
I mean, that is still being blind to reality.
Haldeman life was often shooting someone in the back of the head with two of them and they won't even notice because it deflected just due to their base move speeds. Or shooting them point blank in the face and they didn't even notice because the damage and stagger was already garbage.
It was outclassed by the Zim because the zim doesn't suck. Even turning the brain off on training room targets the pre patch two of the starter shotgun struggled to hurt or stagger your target, when they are just standing there letting you shoot them.
And a shotgun so pathetic that not even a target LETTING you shoot them is effective? Well, maybe there is something true about zimmer salt if you are desperate to lie to yourself that the Haldermans were ever, EVER good.
I'd rather use turners, unironically those are actually pretty okay at wearing down normal pulse armor. Guess what trash shotguns are also a letdown against. Patches making fast mechs even faster and heavy mechs worse at pursuit also sure as hell leans further into "Bring a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ turner instead of lying to yourself the trash shotguns were ever good."
But they can't even be relied on to drive by kill a stationary MT without having to make a U turn for another pass half the time. Or lying to yourself "No see I brought two to do the job one should have, that means it is OP"
At least the fact the game artificially neuters say, the basic laser rifle to deal 95-99% health damage to a basic MT unless you use one of the top two laser damage generators with ruinously slow recharge delay stats comes with the fact a laser rifle can quickly double tap them to death from 250+ meters away anyways.
Basic laser rifle is "Actually good. Would use one to S rank Michigan or strafe duel Chatty again". Hot trash shotgun is "I want to impress my dad at nintendo by saying they are good to own the zimmer users." and slamming your hand in a car door.
