Because for the latter yeah they're kind of mid at best and bad at worst for no real reason.
But the actual Machine Guns are pretty good now, solid DPS and Stagger buildup with decent ammo supply.
Both of the basic ARs are OK.
The Burst AR is some crap middle-ground. Just use anything else. If you need some sort of burst-fire automatic weapon, then use the burst-fire SMGs as they are amazing.
(The RF version that fires single shots and fires burst on charge is really, really good)
Their main weakness is recoil. You're going to want to have arms with at least 135 recoil control so that they don't miss 70% of their shots. This is assuming you are dual-wielding them; you don't need that much if you are wielding a single MG. Once you solve this, you should see a difference.
Linear rifles are overshadowed by dual Ransetsu RFs, those are the only viable choice in that line of weapon, right now. They seem to run better on quad legs or tank treads. The Curtis and Harris both suffer from horrendous recoil, so I find myself not really using them.
every single shotgun except the spas-12alike are great, actually. zimmer's place in the meta is overstated by their early unlock.
Though even with the patch, the don't hold up for actually pushing a target over the edge and suffer from "So I got them to 99.99% stagger or 1% health, but for some reason the next five magazines with enough recoil control to keep them perfectly accurate isn't finishing the job."
really, really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ good against pulse shields though. Like, S rank final boss with a single MG after throwing pulse cannons in the garbage good. and reloads are faster than minigun cooldown. Oh my god the amount of pulse armors ripped to shreds by a single MG.
One real mother ♥♥♥♥♥♥ though is the game has a fancy term for dual wielding them, double trigger. But that just reduces them to horror show accuracy even with beefy arms.
Meanwhile a single starter MG (if you don't shoot anything else) has perfect accuracy with Melander arms. And a single box fed mag will be accurate for half the mag with melander, near perfect all 45 ammo with any of the extra recoil control arms.
The burst MG is surprisingly garbage in spite of being great on paper. PvP people with their back turned are dodging on accident which at least 100% full auto can sometimes cover for. PvE it seems even trash threat assesses them higher. So fodder that will sit there and take it from a full auto MG will side hop out of the way of burst fire a lot.
There is only a very small number of exceptions, and automatic balistic weapons are not it.
