I forgot if AC2 has it, but 3 and Last Raven, even normal handgun can easily cause overheat than explosive.
For both you and enemies, it made Arena trivial with gun arms.
Like maybe AC heat affects performance so it punishes panicked quickboosting and rewarding good light mech play somehow? Or extra heat incurs extra damage but also gives bonus damage to certain weapons or applies fire damage to certain weapons.
It was interesting as an alternative means to cause damage, but I remember exploiting the hell out of it and heating every single AC out I came across with grenade guns. After 3 they nerfed the crap out of that mechanic and removed it wholesale in gen 4. I'd rather they bring back more ECM jammer parts.
I still rate radiators slightly above balancer fins. Even as an AC4 lover those were just awkward filler. Though it seems a lot of people hated asymetrical builds so only cared about incremental "mash forward/backward" thrust changes.
I think fins kinda made sense in AC4 universe, the ACs there wer mostly jets at that point.
