Light-Weight Builds are only viable option?
AC6 is pretty much my first game in its style. I dabbled in Daemon X Machina, but the loot system sucked ass so I left. I really, really like AC6.

However, I can't seem to get anything done without the reverse-joint legs and a high mobility build. I really want to play with quads/heavy armor/big guns, but it's so slow in comparison, and while all the defense bonuses are nice, it only ends up meaning surviving three or four more hits from whatever giant laser beam is melting me, and now I can't dodge those because I don't have the super boost or jump.

I did start using the reverse-joint legs as soon as I got them, I thought they were cool. Did I put myself on a crutch? Do I just need to get good? And are the specific bits of gear that make for good heavy-weight builds?

Also the range on a charged piledriver is criminally low

It's actually very good. It gives you way more freedom to build than AC6 does. So if you struggle with it in that game, you are really going to struggle with it here.
Weird because, i didn't struggle with that game (i just didn't like it at all) and i sure as hell am not struggling here.

In the OP you stated that you are struggling to dodge on anything other than light builds. Asked if you are on crutches. Asked for a build tutorial. Etc.

And just to clarify, I am not talking about struggling to play the game. I am talking about struggling to build a competent mech.

I am not the OP, you possibly need to learn how to read.
In fact, i told the OP that light builds are quite bad meta-wise. Tank tracks do nearly everything light builds do better. I'll still use reverse joints because i like jumping all over the place, but it is clear that the game gets super easy if you run a superheavy tank build.
theres no point anyway host has the better network, he will always have the upper hand

My bad. You all sort of blend together to me.

I run with a fairly mid-weight ac standard bipedal legs. You want a generator with fast recharge over quantity and stick to the ground more in fights and use controlled dashes rather reflexive to ensure you got energy when you need to doge.
Light weights are far from the most viable option. You don't have much weight room to spare (if you are running real lights like the nacht set) so that means less big guns.

But boy, are they fun. After getting good at the game I only run light.

^This is the build I cleared most of the game with. Only difference is that I switched to a coral reactor on NG++.

Well you're running double Stun Needle - really doesn't matter what the rest of the build is.

It kinda does, since the rest compliments them so well

I'm fairly certain you could bring a human sized .22 LR target pistol in both arms and it'll work when you have the twin needles on the back

Hold on, why the VE-20C? I'm 99.9% sure nothing in that build scales with Energy Firearm Damage.

Because VE20C is very well balanced generator, there also similar performance from BAWS but 2k weight heavier (5k vs 7k).

It's not though. It's worse than a VP-20D or NGI 000 in every aspect unless you specifically want Energy Firearm Spec.

After assembling the build it looks like it's just severely limited in generator choices. The only gens that fit are the NGI 000 or the VE20C. I'd personally toss the Mind Alpha core and get something that allows for a better gen.
