ARs and SMGs seem... very meh.
I blame Raven Nest for it for it is oblivious attempt to be balanced, Even if it much better version of the previous weapon damage wise it will have bigger weight and longer reload.
New weapon types are the real upgrade. And you also recieve some quirky weapon here and there like that "firework" missiles, that have minimal reload time between firing it's 3 packs but much bigger one when you fired the third.
Some weapons are direct upgrades for little loss in performance but that's a general theme usually.
I am also fond of the needle pistols. Which list worse damage but actually kick ass because of their fast reload and bigger effective range.
Meanwhile, the huge double barrel laser rifle IS a "straight upgrade" in all performance. But it weighs nearly 8,000 for hitting nearly as hard as a laser cannon but faster.
An important thing about AC is that (most) parts are not going to be bad, only jank or shameless AI makes them bad. I am in NG++ and I am going back to the non DLC melander legs constantly.
It could be worse. we could be in a New Vegas situation where people brag about all the garbage rusty farmer guns as "variety" and then they never use them again as they speedrun their favorite unique super guns anyway. Even the basic baby starter rifle is solid for MT cleanup all game, if you wanted to stick with it. But you are generally better off specializing or bringing a bigger gun.
But some weapons are definitely upgrades over others in practice. Not because they necessarily are stronger, although some really are - like the Zimmerman heavy shotgun is 100% better than the smaller shotgun in pretty much any case. The reason they are better is because they let you make better builds that let you do insane things.
I'm in NG+ right now and still have a fair amount of things to unlock and find (in chests and from log hunting and so on). But I have gotten most things already, and I definitely found upgrades worth it as I went through the game. This game isn't designed to make weapons completely obsolete though, and I'm fine with that design principle. The stronger a weapon is, the slower it tends to reload/fire and the heavier it tends to be - there are always trade-offs.
We have three reverse joints, all three are good at something.
We have three tanks, all three are good at something.
Why. Are there only. TWO. Quad/Tetrapod legs?
The upgrade scale goes from okay to over the top in the blink of an eye.
