They're human pilots.

I think the only AC you interact with frequently with an AI is Chatty in this game.
Then you may have some bosses not voiced + obviously Allmind and all her work in the arena (and more)

Thanks :)

ACs are piloted by humans, but in the AC6 universe it seems almost every one of them (Only one exception I know of) are 'augmented' with some sort of advanced technology.

AC has a history of 'augmented' pilots since the very beginning with the PLUS program, and seems to be still going strong now.

A few logs and late game missions discussed eject sequences. I'm not an AC expert, but it does seem to have different types of pilots. We are a fourth gen who underwent some type of experimentation as "hearing voices is not uncommon" for people like us. But I think our physical bodies are in the body (core) of the mech. But I'm new to the series, so the experts can chime in if I butchered it.

I had no idea chatty was an AI. where is this stated?

The very first time Carla introduces him. Also in some of the logs, and in the Fires of Raven ending

That is about right. The voices are less from being unstable and more from the fact that all the early gen augmentations used Coral tech and Coral is kinda like warp ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The more recent the augment gen the less use of Coral seems likely.

We don't seem to eject so it is likely we are a body bag in the AC core.

I think 621 has at least a semi functionnal body, given that in the escape mission after CEL 240, you're out of your AC, floating adrift in the sewers until you find the old BAWS AC, and have to climb into it. The main bulk of 621's problems is his "fried brain" as per handler Walter's words. I think the coral control device severely ♥♥♥♥♥ with our mind and prevents a normal life outside of piloting an AC.

I want to believe that but if we have a semi-functional body why on earth are we in the middle of a sewer instead of a cell, work camp or re-education center? I'd only be comfortable leaving a prisoner in a sewer if I knew they were a nugget but then how do you get in the AC? A poor lore/story point.

The story does little to show we are a crazy or damaged the whole time it is "all quiet on the western front"

Maybe 621's legs don't work too good, which eliminates the potential of manual labor, and if his brain also don't work too good outside of an AC, then out goes re-education.
Man just lifted himself into the junker with pure arm strenght.

I was confused by this as well. They obviously wanted us alive, but they left us unguarded, right next to an AC. Like, how did that happen? haha
