No hard lock combat
Did anyone else try to play the whole game without ever relying on hard lock? CEL240 and the other Mecha-Malenia definitely stretch playability of this approach.

Any tricks to make it work better?

On keyboard and mouse you are far more accurate and adaptive on soft lock since your mouse controls the camera very precisely, you just can't seem to target specific enemies standing close together that well.

Are you talking controller or keyboard and mouse? Because with keyboard and mouse the hard lock is unbearable so it is a lot easier to stick to soft lock. As for hard lock I never used it once.

Edit: Just saw no mouse next to your name so I will assume you are on console so no keyboard and mouse. In that case either claw grip or a controller with back buttons.

mouse.
you soft lock is better than hardlock.

so if you have a mouse, a steam controller, or Steam Deck you pretty much can keep up without hardlock.

KB+M, it's just that CEL240 and final boss are way too twitchy and easy to lose sight of.

And there are some things seemingly impossible to do without hard lock, like assault boost past the enemy, only to instantly turn around and fire.

You have to get used to using mouse aiming then, or maybe turn the sensitivity up and get used to that so you can track faster enemies easier. Either way it just seems like just use it more and you will get better. I know that is a generic response but it is true.

It's actually possible with quickturn button+back immidiately after you fly by. Quickturn is an underapreciated tool really. It even kinda "combines" with boosting of all sorts.

KB+M means you should never ever hard-lock on an enemy. Just learn to be more precise and accurate with your mouse movements. I'm far from great at video games and I've gone through the game never touching the hard-lock button.

Yeah, I tried quickturn once, and considered it unnecessary for KB+M. I guess, it's needed for assault boost turns,

Still not sure this would actually match a hard locked boost turn to shoot in execution speed - small delay for FCS to re-acquire target and me to actually to react.

How many hours have you put into hard lock vs soft lock? Because it is possible you are just so used to hard lock you are having to relearn many things when you are trying to get used to soft lock.
Stormlock Aug 30, 2023 @ 3:50am
With the hardlock you don't even need to wait for the FCS to acquire the target actually, I've had fights where I boosted past an enemy, mistimed a grenade launcher I meant to fire on the way in, and realized my AC turned at shot the enemy I couldn't even see.

That's how hard lock works? I need to try it for a playthrough so I can actually see how it feels.

I've played soft lock the whole game, I just noticed that instant turn to fire while assault boosting in hard lock seems significantly outside of my soft lock capabilities.

I did not beat cel 240 until i was told of this camera move and immediately i beat him, it was just too annoying to keep track of
ImHelping Aug 30, 2023 @ 4:10am
It is not as hard as it sounds because soft lock has better shot lead prediction. In fact a lot of life is so a boost kick doesn't fly past someone because assault boost is very dumb without a hard lock.

The more close range your gear is, the more you want hard lock to keep up with moron tracking or "So this heavy biped AC is basically faster than a player light ac because.... ♥♥♥♥ you." constantly circling around you up close in ways all the "hard lock will ruin PvP!" doomsayers could only dream of.

As opposed to "I can still see you, you know" soft lock at a distance.
