The first mission is very poorly designed, true. The enemies leading up the helicopter don't teach you want you need to take it down. The design is so bad I've been seeing how to play videos going up on youtube that provide better explanations than I ever could. I beat him on 3rd try, I mean the checkpoint is so generous.

S ranking is gonna be hard tho because the first mission forces you with the starter AC (maybe NG+?).

Flying out of bounds is a bug. I raged pretty hard when it happened agreed. You can however, sword the helicopter when it is stunned/keeping close. How I went about it is 100% aggression. Kept close to medium distance dodging mid air. Best way I can explain it.

are you talking about the boss at the first mission or those fodder helicopter that takes 1-2 rifle bullet?
if its the boss, tip: assault boost towards it and melee(left hand weapon)x2. then land on ground to recover boost(1 second) and rinse and repeat.

For the gunship fight, you want to keep poking with your missiles and gun, air boost to get out of range of the explosions, and use assault charge to close distance and smack him with the beam sword. Two hits will mostly fill his ACS and you can get off solid damage while he's in the red.

But I've seen it do that and/or not do that, and cover doesn't help at all in that encounter as it starts shooting the moment you get out of cover or it flys to you.

Most successful runs against it I've seen has just been flying up and spamming the sword button, ignoring everything else (When it doesn't fly out of bounds). At least so far.
