If I buy the game right now can I already install it and play it at release?

Yes, but depending on your download speed it might be faster to just download it when it is live.

...I think I may be missing something. How would it be faster to start downloading it when it's live than right now?

depends on your connection, if your connection is fast then preload + decryption will take longer than simply downloading after release

Preloads are encrypted to discourage datamining before the release and give pirates less time to attack the drm.

It will likely be a good 20-30 minutes to decrypt, depending on system specs. If your internet is fast enough to download 60gbs in less than that time it would be faster to just download it then.

OK, I think I get it. It isn't that the preload itself is significantly different in size, it's that the additional time to decrypt matters. If you can download the whole thing faster than you could decrypt it, it's better to wait for live. Is that the idea?

exactly

it all depends on your connection and cpu/storage speed

IIRC, steam decrypts the downloads on the fly once games are live/available normally. It's why the DL's can be a big hit on your CPU. That said, if you're on semi-modern HW it shouldn't take too long to decrypt the preload

there's no decryption after release, it downloads unencrypted data after release

It's been a while since I preordered a game that had a preload. The last one was actually fallout 4. I remember that one took almost an hour to decrypt.

I am sure it is faster now, especially since I have better hardware. So I estimated 20-30 mins. We will see though.

I preloaded anyway because I was curious how long it would take, though I can download the game in maybe 10 mins on my internet.

Does anyone know is it possible to preload if I plan to play on linux via proton?

Not sure if this answers your question, but I was able to preload on my Steam Deck, which is Linux/Proton. I *assume* the same would be the case for a standard distro + Proton, but it's not something I've looked into.
