Why do gamers...
seem to like this game so much? What's so special about it, to get that coveted " overwhelmingly positive" rating on Steam.. The actual reviews are of course as useless as an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on my elbow.

My 2 cents. It's a soulslike done right:

Provided you don't overlevel, the enemies are as strong as you are. Overcoming that challenge is what draws a lot of people.

The game gives you many options to face that challenge, many of which will take some time to master. The mechanics the game presents are a mix of Soulsborne combat and some inventions unique to this game.

Soulsborne: dodge, parry, stance break / critical, grapple.
Crab: you need to manage shield heath and find new shields in the environment on breakage, each shell comes with its own offense and defense options.

And in contrast to the grim Soulsborne, this game has a lighthearted charm and humor that is very appealing.

I mean when you buy and Indie developed by a small team you adjust expectations accordingly, but this game goes above and beyond. I honestly cannot believe this Indie developer could make a game as good as this.

Its a pretty solid game, especially for the small dev team involved. They had a core idea, and shot straight for that and nothing else. On that front, they succeeded and should be rewarded for it. However the game is significantly easier than most (good) soulslikes, and so a veteran player might be very disappointed. The writing in the game is fine, but I've found that the people who do not like the writing find it VERY annoying. If what you're looking for is a very superficial and lighthearted game with clear messages about ocean pollution (done fairly well) then this is a game worth playing. If you do NOT like those things, you're not missing out and can pass on this one without worry. I don't think its a knock against the devs, they had a direction and that direction just isn't for everyone.

Also be prepared for crab/ocean puns.

This is a complaint that is not unusual; therefore: level with care or not at all, until the game becomes too hard.

I'm sort of addicted to Soulsborne and did not find it too easy, but I'm used to carefully not leveling too much for online purposes.

Streamers are playing it. Therefore un-touchable.

To be real though, I'm enjoying the game. But I am currently very frustrated with it. There is noticeable input lag and it's honestly worse some times than others, and there's no real way to tell how it'll be until you go and die to the boss the umpteenth time. The game is far harder than it needs to be because the controls themselves decide to bug out and fight with you.

Seeing a streamer play it could also give you a good impression of the game, regardless of what the streamer themselves think of the game. In fact that's how I learned of this game and decided to buy it (would never have known it existed otherwise).

That's also how I decided to maybe not buy death stranding, the hilarity of the reviews was entertaining enough :).

Sounds like you care more about what or why other people like things other than figuring out what you would like yourself.

It's easier than a traditional Soulsborne and at the same time it's harder than it needs to be, because the combat controls have ridiculous input lag. Hit boxes and frames are ridiculously large, too. Being used to Souls games I was continuously frustrated that Kril seemingly gets "caught" in an attack animation several frames before it actually hits. I have yelled out loud in frustration playing this game because the game's controls just refuse to cooperate.

[edit] I either got used to the input lag or the game got patched or something but it's no longer an issue. Game's fun again.

It's always funny to me when people on this platform refer to others as "gamers", as if they themselves aren't also part of that demographic. Like, do you realize where you are? :LaughingOwlcat:
