he doesn't have someone to guide him through the game. will he manage alone?

Yeah, like Fenix said, the content is a much bigger question mark than the difficulty. I don't know your nephew (probably, I do know some eight-year-olds so statistically it's possible I do). Some kids of that age would be completely fine with cartoony deaths and the protagonist working through depression. Others would get really upset. I don't know who your nephew is or how he would feel about such things.

I don’t know kids are pretty smart plus there’s also difficulty options. You can change if he’s having a hard time but at the same time I’m not sure I would want an eight year old playing this simply how violent it is.

sounds like this game might need parental guidance at that age, which I can't supply as an uncle (i won't be there when he plays), so I'll find something else

I might suggest looking at 'mon collector games in the vein of Pokemon. They on the whole tend to have fairly light and upbeat storylines while still carrying a bit of depth and some more well-rounded mechanics. I'd recommend Coromon and Monster Sanctuary. I haven't played it personally yet, but Cassette Beasts as well.

One of the bosses does pull out an "object" that I wouldn't exactly call child-friendly. Kids wont know what it is unless they're being raised by the internet. But it's definitely worth mentioning. :2016bee:

Oh yeah, I forgot about there being a "back massager" briefly featured in a fight with a boss that attacks you with appliances. Eh, I still wouldn't say that it's much of an issue given that it's represented in a completely non-sexual and non-suggestive way and barely appears at all anyway, but good to mention since other people's priorities may differ from mine.
it's also worth mentioning that there are some moments where characters, including the protagonist, curses. For us older people, it's awesome, but some parents may not want their kids to hear some of the things that are said in this game. It's definitely more adult-oriented.

Well, not exactly. Characters use "fake" curses that are puns, like for example "shuck/shucking".

I have a 6 year old, and 8 year old nephews / nieces. I'd say no, first for the difficulty (even with all assists on) it would be to frustrating for them. Also possible no for the narrative content, it's not overally crass but think it's reference points won't mean much to an 8 year old.
With the assists your kid and nephew can easily play the game. There are far harder platformers. As for the story eh it’s pretty simple until the pinball machine.
