Difficulty
I know there are assists for this, but as someone who's played all the Souls games (solo) boy if this game doesn't feel harder than all of them. I just made it to the intimidation crab who already seems harder than any boss in those games:

Fast attack rate. will chain spam attacks

Has an instant kill grab that is faster than your healing, if you try and heal it's always a gamble on if he'll run up and grab you with nothing you can do

Normal attacks will kill you in 2 hits max, some of them in one hit if you aren't in your shell.

I'm gonna abandon my pride and just turn on easy mode lol

The game seems to have a really prominent inverse difficulty curve. The beginning of the game is pretty dang tough, but by the end I was able to kill almost every single one of the last ~5 bosses in a single try.

Odd thing is that the bosses before him felt pretty easy to me, they were either the first try or at least pretty soon after and more because I felt like I was getting the hang of mechanics than anything else.

Well, except for the guillotine guy but he's clearly meant to be fought a bit later I think.

This guy though, he seems pretty absurd.

As an example I turned the difficulty right back up and Grovekeeper Topeda only took a few tries without me actually really getting the hang of dodging his super lunge attack.

Did destroy ALL the shells there though lol

I'm getting Dark Souls 1 and 2 flashbacks with some of the enemy placements in the magic forest area, or whatever you call it.

Ugh yeah some of the archers on ledges are a pain. I just swam past and accepted some damage.

This isn't criticism, by the way :steamhappy:

Honestly this is the best Soulslike I've tried not made by From (though I haven't played them all of course). They have the combat feel down better than a ton of ones with way more money.

I'm still quite early in the game, but i like it so far. Just killed that big crab in the sands between.

I can't really get used to some attack patterns of some basic enemies tho :D

EDIT: i also just beat the intimidation crab and he really is pretty hard. One of his grab moves in phase 2 seems even a bit broken. Seems it gets you wether you like it or not.

He can close in super fast and deals a lot of damage.

As someone who is awful at most Soulslike games, especially those made by FromSoft themselves, I actually felt the opposite for the most part. That while this was still very difficult and quite brutal at points, it did feel easier to me when compared to other Soulslike titles. But then again, I might have also just been having more fun with this one than I tend to have with other Soulslike titles, so I didn't just give up partway in like I have with the Dark Souls games and the like.
It definitely helped that there's not a stamina system since I have a really bad habit of just swinging around my weapon a bunch in the hopes of getting some good hits in, which is obviously not a great way to play Dark Souls or its contemporaries.

With these games I find it difficult to tell if I'm going to have a problem with a boss or not until I've fought it. People will say that x boss is the hardest and I'll do something crazy like kill it during my first try, but then I'll die over and over again to a boss that everyone thinks is a pushover. Your individual play style matters a lot, which is why I like to encourage people not to give up if an early boss is a pain for them.

Yeah after intimidation crab things were pretty easy until inkerton who got me a few times with chain grabs.

Kinda feels like you get a little OP at the end, I basically just blew up a lot of later bosses before they got to attack with a ton of lifestealing too.

Yeah, with stuff like crab hammer life steal and coffee buff for attack speed you can face tank anything in the game barring 1 boss.

For me it was more tentacle.

Tons of extra damage, stun, and life steal. Basically just keep knocking people down and healing

That skill as well, which can still hit even if your attack is interrupted with the hammer. I can see why the apparition upgrades are gated behind an optional boss.
