Collect souls of other creatures?

i found that in game there'd always be a crab or odd salmon highlighted. Is it because it's one of Nix's attacks or can you absorb them like the bugs on the walls?

you can catch the fish if you have a fishing rod, the crabs is spoilery so I wont mention that, sometimes the highlighting on them bugs out though (especially on map load), that is on my to fix list but its semi low priority now, trying to resolve all the more major bugs first.
