Look, Recall and Use are generally the 3 I start off with.
You can also use your questions to make guesses, and if you guess something close but not quite right the Cryptmaster will respond to that.
Basically any action you can do with an object, especially for an object you expect it to be.
Like the example "kiss" used on rat makes him say "i think he likes me"
As already mentioned here, REMEMBER and USE are good commands with a unique response for every object. WEIGH or words like SWING also generally have a response. Many but not all objects have a useful response for READ, OPEN, CLOSE, WEAR, TAKE and BEFRIEND. Trying to SMASH or otherwise destroy an object generally gets a response, and there is often a different one for ATTACK or FIGHT. TASTE and EAT also frequently have separate responses. Finally, while the Cryptmaster will refuse to do anything really inappropriate to an object, his response to that suggestion can also sometimes contain a clue!
I would have preferred someone blurting this out to me or perhaps a note given to me but a conversation would be a more "organic" way of telling me I can do this. I reacted the same way to finding out gossip was a word I could use in conversation - fun dialogues I could have enjoyed earlier were lost.
There is actually a "hint" system buried in options you may want to enable if the chests get a bit tedious, after so many of them I actually allowed the cryptmaster to solve any tricky skull puzzles for me too. You can also say hint for some puzzles (but it won't work for all of them). Sometimes the cryptmaster can be a bit too pushy and spoil some puzzles for you though - it might be because the devs thought testers spent too long on a certain section, rather unsure why that happens for those particular puzzles though.
I wish help actually made the the cryptmaster prompt you on where you were to go next that would have been a nice surprise and would had allowed for some witty banter (since the cryptmaster doesn't like talking about himself much). But personally I didn't like the random feel of the loading screen tips especially since I have particularly long play sessions which makes them obsolete for me. Personally loading screen tips are kind a hit or miss situation for me, when they're too generic and obvious I don't pay attention to them but I would prefer a more organic feel or note instead. Even if it was say... written on a wall or read in a book that would make exploration more fun.
