It's also useful to create barriers. If I remember correctly, monsters will not willingly go through cloud spells (e.g. Cloudkill, Stinking Cloud, etc.).
Quite true. The best part is by the time you get it, most of your party is at high enough levels to be immune, so it's actually party-friendly. Ah, except if you're bringing Half-Elves with you for some crazy reason.
Although really it works better when you have scrolls for it.
