Gold Box Companion Suddenly Not Launching (coincident with corrupt save)

Hey All!
I was about 3/4 of the way through SSB, having made it through PoR and Curse, and generally having a grand old time. I booted up the game to continue through the Western Crevasse, only to find the names of all the characters gone, HPs at 0, and everyone with strange ACs like 60. When I click begin adventuring it lets me move a couple squares before kicking me back to the launch menu. AND, to top it off, Gold Box Companion will no longer come on, even when I load another, non-corrupt save point.
So I figure I don't feel like going back and replaying all the mines and dungeon, especially without the companion, so I figure I'll just grind a little on Fire Giants and then import the characters into Pools of Darkness when they're maxed out.
I do that, and everything is again going fine. Gold Box Companion works great on Pools of Darkness. I do get in the habit of saving things in two places each time, just to be safe. I make it through Thorne's and back to Elminster, and then, bam, again next time I load it up same thing: no names, Weird ACs, 0 HPs. Luckily this time I have the game saved in B also, so I'm able to load it up after the battle with Thorne, no harm done. BUT again, Gold Box companion won't launch now!

I feel like both times I might have closed or shut down my computer without closing the game first, so maybe that's causing the save corruption. But why the heck can't I get GBC to run? Any thoughts? Similar experiences??? I'd really like to finish Pools of Darkness, as it's the one I never played back in the day.

I only just started on Pool of Radiance a couple of days ago, but it still seems to be running fine, along with my save file. I fired up SSB and it at least seems fine; I was able to run around town, and gold box companion was running. If there's anything specific you'd like me to check, I'd be more than happy to. Only thing I can think of to mention is that there was an update maybe a few hours before your post, but I can't find any information on the update.

I would verify game files and use a previous save as a first step.

After reading your post and finding about the update I verified my files and found that 3 files failed to validate and were replaced.

I launched it and seems to be okay for me.

Always use multiple saves.... Just in case.

Unless I am missing something, this seems to be a link to information about the update from Mon, October 10, 2022@12:00 PM CDT (per the post date on the page).

I think Brother Cadfaelis is referring to the update that was issued today or last night. I did see the one they are talking about in my downloads page, but I can't find any info on it.
Perhaps you are getting an updated page Steam isn't showing me.

Are you asking for a link to the update itself or a link to information about the recent update?

If you haven't updated the game yet, then you can click "View" and then "Downloads" to get it. It's provided through the Steam app and you can also see in this section if it auto-updated and when.

If you are referring to information about the update, then open your library and click on the game. If there is information available it should appear here and if not then try clicking "View Latest News" or something similar.

As of yet, I have not seen any info about the most recent update.
