If it's being sold by the copyright owner, then it by definition is not abandonware.

GOG/CDPR owns the rights and they did patch up everything to remove the DRMs and make it work on modern Windows. They partnered with SNEG for publishing. It is definetly not abandonware, if you really want to support this, buy on GOG.

This is what I was wondering, because I'm wary it wouldn't work on modern windows. If this does, it's worth it to me.

I don't have it on this platform, so I can't confirm. But if I recall, the "modern" version I do have includes some form of DOSBox-based compatibility.

And of course the manual-based verification is disabled so that you don't have to check the manual and enter a code to access certain levels.

People do play this game. There are recent Let's Plays of them. It's probably not that hard to get them running.

Are the steam versions DRM-free?

So are these just dosbox packaged games or are they actual ports to modern systems?

These games came out over 30 years ago. They aren't abandonware, they are archaeological exhibits :) I just came looking for Eye of the beholder, found I could get the entire colletion (1,2 and 3) for half what I paid for each game new.

They didnt have DRM back then. What they usually had was a code wheel or a manual check (e.g. what is the 3rd word in the 4th paragraph on page 23).
