Instructions for the All-Seeing Eye automapper
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ALL-SEEING EYE AUTOMAPPER

The automapper can be enabled from the launcher: the "All-Seeing Eye" checkbox must be checked.

THE MAP WINDOW

The automapper should open a map window after a new game is started or a save game is loaded.

By default, the automapper attaches itself to the right side of the game window. This can be changed from the "Window docking" menu, which can be opened by right clicking on the map window. Possible docking choices are "left", "right", and "free". You should use "free" if you play fullscreen, especially if you plan to move the map window on another monitor. The docking can be also be changed by pressing keys 1, 2, or 3 when the map window is active.

The automapper is ideally meant to be used when playing the game in a window. Playing in fullscreen may cause annoyances, as at least in Windows 10, Alt + Tab from a fullscreen DOSBox window minimizes the window into the taskbar. It might be better to Alt + Enter to reset the game back to a window, and then Alt + Tab to the automapper window, do what you wanted to do, Alt + Tab back to the game window, go back to fullscreen with Alt + Enter...

You can resize the map window with the mouse wheel.

A note can be added by holding down Ctrl + left clicking on a wanted map grid.

TEMPORARY FIX TO FULLSCREEN BUG

There was a bug in the initial version of the automapper which caused the automapper to crash if the game was set to fullscreen.

While waiting for the official update, you can download a hotfix for the fullscreen bug here:
http://www.zorbus.net/tmp/ase_steam_fix.zip
http://www.zorbus.net/tmp/ase3_steam_fix.zip

First file is for EOBs 1 & 2, second for EOB 3. Installation instructions are inside the zip-file.

THE COMBAT HUD WINDOW

A second, optional, window is opened on top of the game window. This is the combat HUD, which shows stats of the enemies in front of you. This can be toggled on / off from the right click menu. If you are playing the game in fullscreen, the HUD is not visible, and should be turned off.

You can right click on the combat HUD window for it to position itself slightly lower, hiding the game window title bar. The idea behind this is to create maybe a mildly more immersive experience when playing in windowed mode. It also sets the automapping windows to "stay on top" mode. This feature can be toggled on / off by right clicking the HUD.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The automapper creates a log file (Log.txt) every time it is run. See it for troubleshooting.

The log file is in the ASE-folder, under every game's folder. In most cases, the folder for EOB1 is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Forgotten Realms The Archives - Collection One\games\Eye of the Beholder ENG\ASE

It's possible that the map window is opened outside of your screen, especially if you have multiple monitors. If the program "ASE" is shown in the taskbar, activate it, and press Shift + Windows-key + arrow keys left or right to try to bring the window to your main monitor.

Try starting the game in smaller resolution and in windowed mode.

If all else fails, try deleting the file "Settings.dat" from ASE's folder when the game and ASE are not running.

RIGHT CLICK MENU STUFF EXPLAINED

Most menu actions have a keyboard shortcut key.

"Peek level" reveals the maps for a short duration, but does not set the map as explored. You may want to use this when stuck, or to see if there's still something on the level that you haven't explored.

From the "Show map elements" submenu you can control what map elements are shown.

"Combat HUD" toggles the window on top of the game window. Should be turned off if you play fullscreen.

"Toggle window title bar" toggles the map window title bar.

From the "Unexplore" submenu you can set the current / all level maps as unexplored. The automapper should detect a new game start automatically, and set the maps as unexplored.

"Relaxed item restrictions" in the "Tweaks" submenu enables all classes to use all items, and makes it possible for clerics and mages use bows and slings from the back of the party formation even when a holy symbol or a spellbook is equipped.

"Identified items" in the "Tweaks" submenu automatically identifies all items.

"EOB2: enable resting" enables resting in EOB2. There's a bug in the game that may set the "you do not feel it is safe to rest here" state permanently on. This enables resting in those cases.

"Backup latest save game" makes a backup of the latest save slot. Mostly for EOB1, which only has 1 save slot. A backup folder is created in the game's installation folder.

"Automatic save backups" automatically makes a backup of the latest save slot when the game is saved. A backup folder is created in the game's installation folder.

EOB3 SPECIFIC HELP

This game has a completely different game engine. The automapper only shows floors.

If the automapper no longer tracks the party location or map changes, try saving the game and restarting.

If you used the all seeing eye YOU DID NOT BEAT THE GAME

Back in my day we had to draw our own maps.

It's probably a weird request but I'd prefer the tweak "lower item restriction" thing to specifically just allow bows and slings to be like that rather than make all equipment usable by everyone.

Also, anyone know if racial weapon proficiencies ( Elf bonus to swords, halfling bonus to slings ) or resistances ( gnome and halflings ) actually work?

Very useful, thanks.

I'd rather have a map so i know where the bloody hell i am. I don't want to feel like a eight year old lost in some mega mall in the north east.

ASE 1-2 were great to use, but always had to be started manually. ASE 3 does not start automatically and unfortunately not manually either. Even if I run it as an administrator, nothing happens.

I have already tried the fix and copied it over the ASE 3 file. But nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Does it create the logfile (Log.txt) at all?

If you had to start ASE1&2 manually, then there might be something on your system that prevents them from running from a script. Do you have a third party virus scanner / firewall installed?

Now it's working! I do not know why? I just played around in the EoB III forest, killed a few enemies, set the resolution a little higher than usual, and suddenly it worked.

It's a pity that you can't see any opponents, items, switches, keyholes, etc. from the ASE3 Automapper. But still better than nothing.

This option is only available if you can not rest through the game menu, i.e. If the game currently allows resting, the options is grayed out.

Thanx for tha answer but this isn't the case. it's probably a glitch in the GOG version. I bought the steam version and everything works well. thank you for your time and for ASE. you sir, rock.

The map was working when I first started, now it won't. Any suggestions?

The map works fine when not in full screen mode and when all seeing eye is colored out when starting.

So, the Automapper worked at first for me as well, but now suddenly will not show up. My log keeps showing the same thing after multiple attempts to use the fixes above including deleting the settings.dat from the ASE folder. This is my log entry:

2022-10-12 22:10:39 ASE started from "D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Forgotten Realms The Archives - Collection One\games\Eye of the Beholder ENG\ASE\".
2022-10-12 22:10:39 Game folder is "D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Forgotten Realms The Archives - Collection One\games\Eye of the Beholder ENG\GAME\EYE\".
2022-10-12 22:10:39 Game is EOB 1, English version.
2022-10-12 22:10:39 Trying to find game window with identifiers "DOSBox 0.74" and "START".
2022-10-12 22:10:44 Game window not found in 5 seconds. Closing ASE!
2022-10-12 22:10:44 ASE session ended.

If I try to start ASE manually after loading my game it keeps showing the following log:

2022-10-12 22:15:05 ASE started from "D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Forgotten Realms The Archives - Collection One\games\Eye of the Beholder ENG\ASE\".
2022-10-12 22:15:05 Game folder is "D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Forgotten Realms The Archives - Collection One\games\Eye of the Beholder ENG\GAME\EYE\".
2022-10-12 22:15:05 Game is EOB 1, English version.
2022-10-12 22:15:05 Trying to find game window with identifiers "DOSBox 0.74" and "START".
2022-10-12 22:15:08 Game window found.
2022-10-12 22:15:08 Using identifiers "Select Option:" and "Magic Missile" for base address search.
2022-10-12 22:15:08 Searching for game base address, starting from $10000, attempt 1...
2022-10-12 22:15:08 1st identifier for base address not found.

It will keep attempting to search for the game base address but never start. Any other advise?

Did the problems occur after the update?
Maybe backup your saves and reinstall the game?
