^This to be honest. This game+season passes =every card in game (up to set 10, there is a general consensus another wave of DLC is coming that will go up to the current set in the game), better solo mode and the UI is better too (not as pretty, just better). Master Duel, aside for hoarding gems for months and through events, crafting a deck can run you anywhere from 80-200 if you start from scratch and depending on RNG.
Personally, I love how this game scratches that "open booster packs" itch, but also its just something you do through the game. MD is "free" but make no mistake, they know how to keep you on top of spending your gems basically forcing you to make sure you play during events and all the time if you want to keep getting "free" stuff.
Anything that is "free to play" that has micro transactions that get into hundreds of dollars is trash.
Except Master Duel gives you quite a number of gems for free and you can earn over 5k gems a month. You can easily build a new deck for free every 1-2 months. This is not counting the huge influx of gems you get early on.
Yes it does use some predatory tactics to incentivize you to pay money, but if you realize that then you can ignore those temptations.
=====================
As for OP's question, I remember reading that this particular developer tends to overprice their games. Hence why despite how the game should be no more than $20 base, it is $70. Shame too as this price does drive people alway. There is no cross play with the switch version either which reduces the playerbase by splitting them across two different platforms.
Eventually this game is going to lose support when the game rules change, and while people point out that Legacy of the Duelist got updates for new years, remember that Konami is a much larger company with a yearly revenue that is 7 times that of Bushiroad (based on 2023), that YGO is the stronger brand name, and Konami has their own in-house developers while Bushiroad outsources theirs. I would love for this game to be eternally supported, but it would make no sense for it to be eternally supported as there is no reason for Bushiroad to do so, especially with the playercount this low.
Really tired of this argument. That doesn't make what I said invalid in anyway. It's trash and yes, fine it's preditory on those willing to toss money cus they can afford it (heck I'm one of those people), again, just because you can scrape by for free doesn't change the fact its trash that does still do its best to get you to pay. If anything, the fact you can just barely make it by on gems because you're forced to play every day to achieve it is worth as much to them as selling the gems themselves. It's an extremely efficient system for milking people: You either give them dedicated hours which will always make their product look great to the investors, or you don't have the time and are forced to spend the cash. If you don't have the time to get the "free gems" its probably because you work, ergo the target for making money.
So please quit with this lame argument everyone on MD says over and over. It's a trash system that gets what it needs and its extremely garbage.
I am not going to quit it with this argument because it is not a lame argument and 5k+ gems/month isn't scraping by. 5k+ gems a month is actually a very decent amount and it isn't that much time per day; unless you want to say it takes you hours to clear trivially easy dailies.
A trash system would be Hearthstone's where you on average earn 2000 gold a month, which is only 15 packs, assuming you buy all 15 in bulk.
Master Duel's 5k+ Gems is over 50 packs a month. That is plenty to work with.
I am not going to say it is a perfect system, but it'a definitely not trash. Especially with how in YGO there is no rotation.
Unfortunately, that's only half of the argument.
The other half is the high price of the game actually makes it prohibitive for some people to buy. I believe in the price is based on what the conversion rate from the price is the US, which makes the game prohibitive expensive in a number of countries. This has actually contributed to the low player population of the game. Really hard to argue that the price has not affected the health of the game.
Think of it this way, the game costs more than triple A games like Baldurs Gate 3 and Armored Core 6. Next month Gran Blue Fantasy Relink launches, and according to Amazon it is $60 USD for base. Would someone spend $70 for Dear Days (more if they want new card sets) or would they rather spend $60 on games like BG3, AC6, GBF Relink, etc.
Based on the numbers you can find on the steam charts, the price very clearly has hurt the game's multiplayer population. If the game sold for $20 with the new card sets selling for like $10, we'd probably would have seen a much larger playerbase on steam. Even from an economic standpoint, the game probably would have made more profit from the additional number of sales at a $20 price tag than it did with this $70 price tag; especially when you consider how little it probably took to make thus game.
