“Bro never even found out that each character has more methods of dealing damage than just "MaShInG sQuArE".”
The funniest part of that is that you actually think this would have swayed ANYONE’S opinion of the game. The slightly less funny part of it is that you think it’s somehow his fault for not knowing this and not the game’s fault for not making it clear. I’ve had the game since launch and I’m still finding out new quirks to characters because this game is so ass at explaining anything to you. You only get a basic tutorial in the bare bones, trash story mode that nobody in their right mind would even touch and it doesn’t even explain everything you’d need to know about the game. Oh, but Charlie’s not-review is so not worthy of being a review despite it absolutely being an accurate representation of how most people would fare going into this game. Most people would be confused AF by this game because it wants to have this quirky and different gameplay, but doesn’t want to bother making it accessible in any way despite this being the first game in the series. But let’s blame content creators for the game dying and not the game itself and its myriad of issues. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’d load into a match in the Rush Battle mode and get instantly hit by an attack because the CPU doesn’t have to wait for the massive red text on its screen to go away before it can tell what’s going on. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times me and my friend swear the CPU is reading our inputs on higher difficulties. He’d be knocked down onto the ground and get back up. He’d have invincibility frames for a while or until he performs an action, but the CPU will throw out an attack to counter what he does the instant he presses a button, as if it knows that his invincibility frames will be gone. The story mode itself is nothing but an anime screenshot slideshow, except it doesn’t even have every important story beat so you’re better off ignoring it and just rewatching the show. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the way they tell the story in this mode is confusing af too. They start it with a flash forward to Yuji fighting the Special Grade Curse, then jump back in time to his execution, then jump forward in time to after Yuji gets brought back to life and is training with Gojo, before jumping back in time again to the actual beginning of the show. And they don’t make any of this clear, so any ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ experiencing the story for the first time through this game won’t have any clue what’s going on. But noo. The game is only dying because of content creators, right? Lmfao. And that’s not even mentioning any actual issues with the game. You’d played plenty of fighting games, and you don’t see any problems with the combat in this game? You don’t see any problems with there being a metric f***ton of endlag after every action that you do? My friend was getting attacked by a Gojo, right? He step dodged out of the way of the attack and went to go and punish the Gojo, but there was so much endlag after dodging that the Gojo was able to just immediately follow up his own missed attack and punish my friend for making the right read and successfully dodging the attack. And you don’t see any problems with that despite playing plenty of fighting games before? The entire combat system is flawed in ways like that. Me and my friend both used our Joint Attack setups on each other at the same time and instead off it doing what you would expect and just canceling out both attacks, his just arbitrarily overpowered mine and sent me up into the air. For no real reason at all. He didn’t have super armor. His wasn’t a projectile. Our attacks were similar enough, but the game clearly didn’t know how to handle that interaction and just let his go through. Me and my friend were fighting a Mahito, too. Mahito uses his DE, so my friend uses his DE to cancel it out. Tell me why doing this caused Mahito to end up in a permanent grounded state in which we couldn’t even attack or damage him? Also tell me why this only got fixed when I used my Ult on a random different enemy? What about when you’re doing the Rush Mode and the game just blatantly cheats to screw you over. Gojo normally has to sacrifice his Cursed Energy levels in order to use Limitless, but when he’s a CPU in this mode it doesn’t cost any levels to use? A lot of the opponents will start at max Cursed Energy and it won’t reset even if they die, so someone like Inumaki gets a blatant advantage since his Cursed Speech is stronger and costs less to use based on the difference in your levels. So god forbid you have to fight an Inumaki round one, he’ll start with enough of an advantage to just outright kill you with two uses of his Cursed Speech. What about all of the super armor on all of the Curses that you fight? You’ve played fighting games before. Is it ever a good idea to give opponents in a fighting game an overwhelming amount of super armor?
Why don’t we talk about how the game is clearly unfinished? The story mode loves to throw you in matches where you’re going up against three other opponents yourself or where it’s a big free for all match or in 1v1 fights, but there are no options to set up matches like that online or in the free battle mode? What’s more, there’s no way to invite friends to different modes. Instead, you have to have a friend join your Online Lobby and start up a match like that. And that wouldn’t be much of an issue, but say we’re doing co-op and we want to use the Exp we gained to level up? Now we have to close out the entire lobby, go back to the Online Co-Op mode, level up there, start a whole new lobby, and restart the game mode from there. Instead of just being able to do all of this from the actual game mode itself. If you’re doing a regular online versus match, you also need to set it up from that Online Lobby. And they clearly didn’t think this through at all, because you can choose characters for the CPU and their strength and can even decide to make the CPU stand there and do nothing like it’s a training mode. You can’t pick a CPU’s outfit or color. That’s just randomly chosen for you because why would you even want that option?
And what about game balance? Yuta has this cool mechanic where Rika will come out after he and his teammate suffer enough damage. She’ll temporarily give him infinite cursed energy and she’ll interrupt opponents combos to save Yuta or even capitalize on Yuta’s combos to do extra damage to opponents. Pretty cool. Only downside is that Yuta is pretty mid until Rika comes out.
Fushiguro also has a “Rika” mechanic. When his Cursed Energy is maxed out, he can summon Totality and it would do all of the same things that Rika does, minus the infinite cursed energy bit. The difference is that Fushiguro’s team doesn’t have to be losing for his “Rika” to come out, and he can use it as many times as he wants as long as his Cursed Energy is maxed. And he is also a decent enough fighter without Totality being able to interrupt combos, unlike Yuta who was balanced so he was mid until Rika shows up because she’s so powerful.
Eso also has a “Rika” mechanic. Kechizu will act as his second Ice Climber and will run around and support Eso. You can command Kechizu to attack independently of you, but the cool thing about this is that it’s active all the time. No need to wait for your team to be at a disadvantage. Balance, amirite?
What about the quirky inclusion of Sukuna, a character whose entire gimmick is “My attacks can hit my allies too” in a game that completely revolves around team play? Is he an interesting character? Sure. But who else can’t stand having your combos and attacks constantly interrupted by a Sukuna who can’t be bothered to just deal with their own enemies while you deal with yours? Who else can’t stand Sukuna running up and think it’s “lolsoquirkyyyyyyy” to only hit you with his Domain Expansion and drop you down to 1 health for no reason? I hate the fact that I have to avoid playing with Sukuna players if I want to have fun and wish he’d just been designed as a normal character instead. This kind of thing is fun in games like Pirate Warriors where it doesn’t matter that much if Sanji can’t hit women, but in an actual fighting game? Imagine if there was an actual fighting game where your characters gimmick did nothing but actively hurt your team. Imagine an actual One Piece fighting game where Sanji couldn’t hit women and all your opponent had to do is pick one in order to win if they knew you were gonna use Sanji. (Burning Blood). Imagine making a team based game and making a character who doesn’t work well with a team or doesn’t contribute to team play in any way other than “I can do big damage.”
I'm not saying this game is ♥♥♥♥, but it looks like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game, like a 10-15 bucks game at best. It definitely doesn't look like a full price game.
Personally I'd say it's wroth a solid $30, maybe even $40. It's certainly not worth what they're asking in its current state. The animation quality is a bit inconsistent, and the graphics are nothing impressive. The slow pace and floaty movement makes it look clunky, and indeed it is a little bit. But when you're playing a match with people who know what they're doing, it doesn't feel as slow as it looks, because the timing on whether you dodge an attack, or land your counter attack, or save your ally from a combo before the opponent chains into a special move, is all still tight. The character roster, and number of individual attack each character has, are both low compared to most anime fighters. It's not hard to see why people were so put off by the game.
But there's a lot of potential in the game too.
No 2 characters really play the same, and the focus on teamplay combined with how health/energy is handled makes for a very unique fighting game experience. And since you're always in a team of 2, the 16 character roster actually presents 120 possible team combinations. And who you're paired up with can impact how you play to some extent.
For example, the game has a combo limit. If you and your teammate alternate attacks to bully an enemy for too long, they'll eventually enter the fall-down state where they can't be hit, and be given a chance to get back up and at least start blocking before they can be hit again. Now, if you're paired up with Yuji, his attacks don't seem to bring enemies to the combo limit, so you can stand shoulder to shoulder with him, and beat down on an enemy until one of you reaches the Cursed Tehcnique part of your combo, dealing damage. This makes sense because Yuji is always teaming up for his fights in the anime/manga. Meanwhile if you're paired with Gojo, his attacks bring enemies fairly close to the combo limit before chaining into his CT, so if you try to target the same enemy, they'll likely enter falldown before you do damage. His combos also knock enemies around before teleporting to them, making it hard for allies to target the same enemy as him in the first place. This again fits with the anime/manga, as no matter who Gojo's ally is, in a fight they can only get in his way, assuming they can even keep up.
Any time I analyse the game it's clear that the devs did their best to make the characters fighting styles, their stats and the game's mechanics feel accurate to the lore of the show, and on top of that they produced a very unique dynamic for the flow of combat.
I hope when this game goes on sale, and the weird hate-boner people have for the game has gone flaccid, then more people will give the game a chance and see it's really not a bad game, it just needed more time in the oven. And that despite its flaws, It's really fun once you understand it
Yea cuz the games fun and people are REALIZING IT👍
