You never go in the walls of anything, despite what I was told. No vent systems, nothing, every level is nearly the same. I get that the setting is the North American forest but you could definitely have more varied maps. A lot of the game play is replaying levels, which if you like that, then great, if not, I wouldn't buy.

The levels would not be best described as "micro sandboxes" because in most, while you are able to approach SOME in anyway you want, ultimately you are speed running all of them and that is how they are intended (designe) to be played. If you like replaying the same levels over and over in order to unlock another level that is minimally different from the one you were just playing, this is the game for you. At least they aren't randomly generated!!!

If you've never seen any media ever, the story is really breathtaking and original.

The enemy AI is ass and don't have the right voice lines to make you feel like a badass. They don't feel scared. They run in a straight line and attack or shoot. There is no coordination. There is no taking care of wounded or covering fire or anything. This game feels like any other speedrunning game. I feel like I'm shooting targets instead of fighting people.

Giving this a negative review for roughly the same reason as the handful of other negative reviews here: the awful implementation of the scoring and challenge system.

The scoring and side objectives are at first glance very similar to the likes of MGR, DMC or Ultrakill. The latter is probably the best point of comparison as it is also an indie FPS. In reality, I Am Your Beast uses them as a hard barrier for progression, and also do not even allow you to complete objectives on your first go. This means that as you progress down the story, you will be required at multiple points to stop what you're doing, go back to a previous level, and deal with those fiddly, annoying, janky challenges. The challenges are drip fed to you and as far as I've played, none of them were interesting or actually exciting to complete.

This decision alone kneecaps the game, its pacing, the story and everything around it, forcing you to replay the same content ad nauseum for the privilege of seeing more. It's incredibly stupid and a deal breaker for me. As fun as it is, I Am Your Beast is but one "fast paced FPS" among many and if I have to choose, I'd rather choose the ones that don't disrespect my time like this.

I saw this was a 99% positive fast paced fps so I picked it up. For context I've beaten the base game and the support group levels, and some of the challenge levels. I also have some S ranks but my average rank is B.

Art, music, sound, and feel of the game are all great.

Gameplay wise, it's just ok for me. It's a speedrunning game in the same vein as neon white. The fun and mastery of the game comes through replaying levels for S rank. Memorizing where certain guns can be picked up. Finding the best path through the level. Memorizing where explosive barrels are. It's like a puzzle game pretending to be an fps game. I have nothing against combat puzzles, some of my favorite games (Doom eternal) are essentially combat puzzles. The problem for me is that the solution to the combat puzzle in this game never really involves shooting people better or dodging better. I felt that 80% of the time the way to get a better time was just to find another explosive barrel. I don't actually like shooting explosive barrels. It's a giant static target that kills 3+ enemies in one shot. I want to shoot the enemies myself. I play fps games because shooting enemies is fun but this game seems to fundamentally be about running through levels while doing as little shooting as possible. Every timeskip is either deciding not to fight a group of enemies, or using an explosive barrel or bee hive or something so that you can take out 5 guys with only a single shot. Apart from efficiency, the scoring system straight up prioritizes things like explosive kills over headshots. Regular kills give you 0.3s bonus, headshot kills give you 0.5s bonus, and explosive kills, bear trap kills, etc give you 1.0s bonus. So instantly shooting 3 guys in the head literally loses you 1.5s over shooting the bright red unmissable explosive barrel conveniently placed right next to their spawn. Oh did I also mention the game has insane bullet magnetism? Shoot in the general vicinity of a head and it gives you a headshot. It makes it so that it's actually more efficient to shoot at the air above each enemies head to get the full magnetism effect instead of accidentally hitting them in the body instead. There's also no setting to turn this off btw.

Overall, if you really like speedrunning games or want to experience the typical fps power fantasy but don't really enjoying aiming and shooting, this is the game for you. If that doesn't sound appealing to you and you just want a fun fast paced fps, I'd look elsewhere.

kinda bummed because i almost always instantly fall in love with turbo-paced comically badass FPS games like this one, but it just did not click for me. it feels like every action and gunshot was specifically engineered to be as unsatisfying as possible. paper thin sound design, little to no weight in the kicks and punches, just nothing for me to latch onto and want to replay over n over. big fan of the incredibly strong anti-militarism right off the bat though.

Entirely personal reason, while it can be fun it forces you to complete side objectives in order to progress story. If its a requirement it shouldn't allow you to complete the mission in order to progress further down.

The enemy AI is completely braindead. They just walk toward you and shoot. Every level is just mowing them down with no challenge or strategy. The only moderately difficult missions involve dodging helicopter gunfire but really that just boils down to glancing at the minimap from time to time. Even if you do get hit, your health pool is absolutely massive. If you don't just stand there, the enemies will *never* kill you.

i'd love to give this game a thumbs up because it has lots of potential, but it's a *forced speed-running game* in disguise and nothing in the game's promotional material explains or demonstrates this...

basically, if you don't finish levels quickly enough and complete bonus objectives you aren't permitted to progress.

the thing that drew me to the game was the xiii art style and promise of a story, not the fact that i'd have to play it quickly or kill enemies in obscure ways.

"fast-paced" does not have to mean "time attack".

It reminds me of faster paced Superhot. I like how the game is laser focused on what it's intended to be mechanically and it executes it well. In the end I can't get behind it though. It's a neat game up to a point but ruined itself for me with a progression wall. The game insists on completing mandatory "bonus objectives" to move on to the next level at certain points. I don't really care about getting X number of knife kills or whatever. It would have been totally fine if it was optional for added challenge or a higher score, especially when the game literally markets itself as a micro-sandbox, but it isn't that way. The protagonist got annoying to me fast too. He's a douche and I don't really equate that to cool or interesting. Get it on sale if you want it.

I didn't know each level would be a minute to 30 second snippet. I thought it was a full game with full levels that would be at least 5 to 10 minutes each. Having mini levels that end every 30 seconds ruins the immersion. It is basically 26 mini missions that you can choose to replay to get a better time to get a better score and higher rank for each mission. After each mission there is a little dialog between the main character and his old boss. After the first missions ending dialog It is very predictable how the dialog is going to play out for the rest of the missions. And since each mission is super short it gets pretty annoying fast. The game is a little fun but for me this is something I may pick up in a few years when the game is $2. It does have a challenge mode to play instead of the story missions but I am not really into that.

I do recommend the game but only for under $5. The game is super light so it runs well at 4k 120fps. The graphics are nothing to write home about but those are clearly not the focus of the game. I am just not into speed running a bunch of 30 second mini missions with annoying predictable dialog after each one. I am giving the games a thumbs down for the price and predictability. Also because I didn't see it mentioned anywhere the game would be a bunch of 30 second missions. I was thinking this would be like the old game Thirteen. It is not other than the Cel Shading cartoon look.

Also when I viewed the results screen after the first mission I clicked on something that was supposed to give me more details on my run and then the game soft locked. I had to alt f4 to exit because it was unresponsive. I could move my mouse and the music was still playing but I could not click on anything and none of my keys did anything.

Why make the crosshair off center? We are not in Halo.
