Does anyone else get extreme amounts of lag?

Every time I start or load a planet, the game will become extremely low FPS for a while and it only randomly fixes itself after several minutes. It's very annoying.

I only ever get lag in any game when I've left a web browser open to alt+tab to, usually with more than a few tabs in use, as at some point their hog of memory becomes a problem.

Firefox in particular is usually the cause, but then I tend to use firefox more than other browsers.

I've discovered that the issue specifically arises when I load a planet or start a new one, and it goes away after selecting a draft. It's very consistent.

Yeah same! It was very consistent. I have a 144 hz monitor and turned off vync, set target frame rate to 144 fps and the problem went away

I have also encountered this issue. One time it helped closing all the chrome windows but the second time it didn't

The only time I've encountered this is when I click twice to load the game. This typically works for many standalone games, but Steam only requires a single click. Double clicking may launch it twice, and lag happens. Fortunately, closing one of the open game instances makes the speed perk right up, again.
