So, what are oceans good for then, please?
What would be nice is using islands as an equivalent to the mountain. The main drawback of oceans at the moment being you can't benefit from any of those special features.
I like it this way, don't lake the sameness / streamlining that seems to permeate most games nowadays.
It becomes (or at least is supposed to become) two separate oceans in that case.

I think an island biome would be pretty cool.
Also, to the people talking about the ocean being split, don't build islands. There's no limit or penalty to expanding far to one side, so you can utilize a 10+ tile ocean by just settling on the coastline.
Their animal/plant/mineral choices give them some distinction. Deserts don't have a wide variety of plants, and forests don't have that many minerals. Want a ruby and diamond to clinch your wealth? You won't find that in a rain forest. Not to argue with your idea--I would prefer something more obviously distinct as you do, but the items available (especially with different, rotating drafts) lead you down specific paths.
lol they didn't fix it since demo
