The game plays exactly like squad. You capture towns/bases and you can then build upon them with structures.
In regards to the massive battles it doesn't necessarily play like that. Each area feels a little isolated. The most you'll see is a few helicopters flying around dropping troops off but that's about it.
The other night I was playing and I started defending a base. After we stopped the attack a helicopter pilot came over comms and asked if anyone needed to get picked up. We asked for transportation and he soon arrived. Then a whole squad jumped in and he took us to another battle in a other town and we successfully attacked that area.
Just to give you an idea of what's possible..
You can capture a base as an infantry, join a group of snipers to attack a base from a distance without being seen, ride in a heavy armed vehicle and destroy everything in your path, be a logistics truck driver and carry supplies while avoiding being killed. , be a helicopter pilot and dedicate yourself to taking troops to the point of battles, placing mines and ambushing enemies on the roads, going stealthily at night and attacking a base, carrying out an insertion from the sea using a helicopter and then attacking a beach and capture a supply connection point, carry out zone defenses and then be the last man defending and see yourself overwhelmed, use the enemy uniform and equipment to attack them from a distance so that they do not suspect you, steal an enemy radio and listen to the movements they are going to do it to attack a base or where they are hiding, these are things that have happened to me in my 300 hours of playing and almost 400, the sand box makes each situation different making it fun, but it is not a game of constant action and many times it is walking and without having fired for almost an hour.
