Any tips for a noob?
Hey everyone. Absolutely loving this game. I've got a handle on the AI bots but when it comes to co-op, by the time I work out if they a friendly or not it's too late. I think partly this is due to to bad ping being from Australia. The name tags seem to disappear over a long distance. The servers with good ping never have anyone on them. I have learnt a lot from just listening to people in game. TIA

Identifying friendly or foe (IFF) within a short time window can be difficult if you aren't properly equipped and positioned to do, and you aren't in contact with anyone else who is.

Rather than allowing yourself to address them on a case-by-case basis, you can actively preempt these situations by extending that time window.

How you can do this is to practice situational awareness and movement fundamentals, the product of which is maneuvers over terrain.

The "How not to get shot" section in the Basic Rifleman page of dslyecxi's TTP2 can provide some food for thought, and the whole document is an excellent reference for beginners and advanced players alike:

It's hard to address your broad and generic problem without writing a full-blown guide, so you may want to post more specific questions after thinking over your experiences.

Otherwise if you want more details and guidance just add me on Steam and we can talk about ArmA and practice in-game.
