How To Download & Use Mods?

Heya!

I'm dumb. How do we download (and where) mods, and how do we use them? Especially for servers? Do I have to uninstall any mods if I wanna play vanilla, or is it one of those intelligent modding mechanics that reads it based off servers? And how do I actually use the mods?

a steam workshop is planned but not here yet.
the workshop is accessible through the games main menu.
you can either go through this and look through mods you want and test them out through the server listed below the mod description, or in GM after activating the mod in the manager,

or you join directly into a server through the server browser. modded servers have a puzzle piece icon and through spacebar, iirc, shows a list of all mods used and how many MB/GB of download it is.
there is also a mod manager. it's a bit weirdly set up imo but you can (de)activate mods through it.
normally joining any server will enable and disable the mods as needed for the server.

i have mods that wont let me uninstall in game. they get an error when trying to update/download and it wont let me uninstall it at all. do you know where the mods files are usually stored so i can delete them manually? i of course tried uninstalling the game but again...of course that didnt work. tried clearing steam cache too just in case.
