Whats this game about?
So I have played Arma 3 and other games from the developer. However I was wondering how different (or same) is Reforger to 3 or other games? Is it more arcadey? Is it more like Squad? Is it more like Arma 3? What am I looking forward to here? I have been thinking about getting it for some time now.

It's exactly like squad with the freedom of Arma 3.
The standout feature is Conflict, a PvP conquest-style mode. Interactions are detailed requiring focus on specific parts, like door handles or dashboards. It’s an incremental upgrade from Arma 3 in interactivity and a major leap graphically.
When I play Reforger, it feels like I'm playing Arma 2, Battlefield Bad Company, and Escape From Tarkov at the same time. The impeccable Cold War vibe is complimented by the unique ambience of unchecked gamer words transmitted over the team radio channel, akin to the COD lobbies of old.

It's complex to describe it as it is a very unique experience but It's like Arma 3, Squad, Battlefield and DayZ had a baby.

The military sandbox and heavily modded aspect of it remind me Arma 3.

The weapon handling/combat and the graphics remind me of DayZ.

The Conflict gamemode definitively feel like squad and battlefield sometimes but with a bigger scope in term of features and what you can do.
You are probably best off watching some YouTube game-play to see what you think, what I can say is I have played for a few days now and put in 38 hours, its great fun overall.

Those YouTube videos do edit out the annoyances most of the time as they like to highlight the fun stuff, like, you rarely see them walking for 30 minutes because your team does not bother to get transport going, or messing with your inventory for 10 minutes because the server admin decided the server needs 40 mods including 10 different color boots. And than there are the server issues where it kicks you for no reason after almost making it to your destination with 900 in supplies in the back of your truck.

Servers can be hit or miss, hitreg and/or damage/penetration can be hit or miss… There is no soft resting rifle, only hard mount. No holding breath, aim is affected by stamina, movement and shooting position. You can not switch firing shoulders like Arma 3. You can not shoot your rifle out of vehicles like A3. Personally, performance is quite bad compared to Squad (expected) and maybe even worse than Arma 3.

Due to those mechanics gunplay feels floaty. Maybe it is more realistic to not be a laser beam, but losing soft weapon resting, switching shoulders with rifle, and no holding breath… it can be very sloppy gunplay. Add that ontop of choppy frames… not the most enjoyable.

The main gamemode is conflict and to me it feels like an even less organized round of squad. Some people love this sandbox feel. To me; there are enough points spread out on the map that the front line is not really discernible. The teams are likely fighting over multiple points at the same time, when and how they feel like it. It is not linear. Feels spread out and disorganized to me. I mostly play KOTH instead but the team stacking is pretty gross on those servers, you either get into IND or lose the round.

I am also downscaling and using FSR on 1080p using a 1070ti card. I have never done that before with other games in order to get stable frames.

Overall I don’t think it’s much better than A3. Definitely over-hyped at the moment. The coolest part to me is the LPVO and other weapon/attachment mods, if they had the same weapon mods in A3 KOTH then I might just go back there.

If you want context on the story and settings just check Arma 1 Cold War Assault

This game is PVP. Gameplay loop is simple. You go find an enemy, you shoot him 15 times, he turns towards you, shoots you 10 times, both of you have not taken damage since the netcode was asleep. Then you keep magdumping until you win. The one who has the better aim AND luck on his side wins. Atleast that is the case with 50% of the engagements. Does not matter if you have one of the fastest PCs on the planet and a 1 Gbit connection. 12 and below Server FPS will find you and hunt you down once servers get full and busy.

Sometimes when it works its like a hardcore shooter. Really great. But its not there yet to work reliably.
