Hackers are looking for a payday. They want a substantial amount of Bitcoin to cease the attack.

Several online articles on the entire situation. Google 'Arma Reforger DDoS' and pick your poison.

It seems to be a group called "stylesquadown" is taking credit for the attack, they post on twitter/telegram. Although there is no confirmation or evidence that proves its them. Who knows what is really happening.

If the group "stylesquadown" is truly responsible, they have stated they do not want payment. It seems like the attack is possibly political? Seems like they don't like BI.

I heard a rumor it was because of a Ukraine vs. Russia mod on the workshop
The reason they are doing it? Don't know.
The reason it is happening is because Cro$$play requires hosting outside of Steams structure. Steams is well established and protected better. It is likely very little thought went into the system in terms of real security and the main focus was Cro$$play.

This has very little to do with it. Steam doesn't host Arma infrastructure. The reason it's failing is because Reforger uses more modern methods of user authentication, so the authentication requests are going to a primary server, which is the one being hit, which then fails to authenticate. So servers aren't being displayed and you can't access the online services. There is no "security" breakdown. DDOSing doesn't require a security breach, if it's on the internet it can be DDOSed. DDOS protection is inherently a reactive method, you can't prevent an attack from taking place. If the attackers are using different botnets there is nothing you can do because as soon as you've filtered out the first set of attacking IPs they are attacking from another set. You could mitigate by having many authentication servers but they can be hit too if the group attacking is dedicated enough, which considering we're on week 2 of this issue, they are.
