should they not just let us see ourselves on the map
With the amount of people solo squad just to get the icon surely it would make more sense to just show your location so there's less solo squads and better team play?

i don't mind either way but there's like 40 icons in one game.

Yeah...I kind of feel the same. With the way things are now, you get 64, 1-player units running around, which is obviously the exact opposite of what is intended. They need to find a better way and create greater incentives for players to run in actual units of 6 together.
Vanilla is 1990s so not seeing others or yourself on the map is accurate. Yes, terrain appreciation is a skill, and as I was trained in the military, navigation on the map is fairly easy, to me. It’s a skill, do you want to learn it?

Play WCS if you want to have the game do this for you. Or learn to navigate based on the terrain, a real world skill.

Big no from me, its a skill. Learn to read map and environment. And devs share this view , it was in latest AMA
They've talked about making changes to how squads work so people don't solo squad. I don't know how they would do it other then increasing EXP earned. I don't see them locking loadouts to squad roles and I know people do not want that.

I would like it if there was some way to check if there are friendlies in an area without having to blare it over Platoon chat, which is another issue entirely. Some sort of scan where you automatically sync radio channels with the people in a given area. Or maybe each base has a channel you can turn to, to help with coordination.
If they do add such a feature, it needs to be a server side controlled option that prevents it server wide. Some like the challenge of figuring out location and not seeing a real time representation of their location. For that same reason, it would be viewed as unfair to have others to always know where they are by a marker on the map. It is a paper map, not GPS.

Don't know what has triggered you, I said I don't mind either way and I navigate the map okay after 20 hours, I wasn't saying because I want this I mean the fact there is 50 icons you don't really need to know your location you spawn and just follow the red icons to where you want to go.

Does it show your icon when youre squad leader? I thought it didnt.
It don't but others see your icon so ppl use it as a SA for others since your SLIcon is visible for all but yourself
Been playing a week, squad is way north of the map somewhere hell I don't know, end up just jumping in a random jeep with guys.
I think it should be a server setting and enabled for official servers and i'd honestly push for said servers to run a simplified version of the game full stop, Third person enabled, Team killing off, name tags on, map markers, kill feeds ... ect ect, yes casual.

But i'd also make 'Realistic' an optional server setting which turns all that off AND blocks players from playing on these servers until they have completed the tutorial.

Do I personnaly need any of that? no, but I am a realist (or cynic you can pick I don't care cause the result is the same), I just don't believe the player base as a whole will ever be elevated to the level that the game is designed to cater for ... simply because many of the people here just want to be playing battlefield, so accepting that reality ... just siphon them off from the rest of us and give them what they want and if any of them want to experience more? well they can, they just gotta finish the tutorial.

this has been asked a million times and the answer is always the same, with vanilla arma you dont see yourself on the map there are various mods that do make you see yoursellf on the map
