yes in the sense of being able to do more alone and having more of an impact solo. Should still TRY to work as a squad tho prolly. plus theres tons of battlefield like servers.

No the control layout is pretty straightforward.

In terms of gameplay it's a mixed bag. It can be action packed one sec and then dead the next. The whole point of the match is to experience it in the moment. It's less about winning /losing the match and more about the experience. There is also much more freedom and types of servers than squad so it doesn't all fit nicely into some packaged gaming experience.

What exactly are you looking for in this experience is the biggest question you need to ask yourself.

The complexity comes in through the supply lines and base building parts that are more complicated than squads similar mechanics. The game-play is more slow paced because it includes the experience of having to travel from one city to another to get to combat. You can get into the action quicker if you just spawn in at a hot FOB, though.

Squad is very narrow and limited. Arma, due to the editor can produce almost anything. What I am saying is it depends on the server and what mods and community there is. There is something for everyone in this game and as time goes by it gets even better due to the amazing mod makers.
it's, imho, the polar opposite to games like CoD and Battlefield and indeed squad as they get one into the heat of combat fairly quickly.

What appeals to me in the Arma series is the lack of "boarders" and unclimnable cliffs that the other games use to funnel the action to specific choke points/events.

to me, the battlescape evolves more naturally in the Arma series in a way that's reminiscent of reality compared to the artificial (although often fun) channelling of other titles.

This has caveats though, as one can get stranded if one isnt careful and other games are often easier to "have a quick blast" in.

Arma is an Arma game ... There is no real equivalent in this world apart Operation Flashpoint series.

In terms of mechanics and features it is more casual than other ARMA titles but it is not as casual as Battlefield, it's basically next to SQUAD on the scale with Reforger closer to ARMA and SQUAD being closer to Battlefield.

Reforger is not really lacking for depth, which naturally takes it away from the casual tag somewhat ...

But It does not matter how much depth the game has, when the people you will be playing the game with (and against) render everything down so it becomes a Battlefield game, just like SQUAD, only more receptive to the lonewolf playstyle. Every single problem that SQUAD has in terms of teamwork and the lack of it, is present here.

If you want to play Reforger in a less casual manner or in the most simple term possible, as a team, you gotta find a server which strives to offer that kind of environment or you go private ... just like SQUAD.

And just to put this in perspective, I enjoy Reforger more than SQUAD, but this is in spite of the players, not because of them.

Nope both are actually equally the same level of difficulty of mechanics and gameplay features.
Depends. You can 100% play it just casually and do your own thing. Or you can play extremely organized with people in the server or your friends. I do my own thing mostly and kidnap random other people to join my activities sometimes and win most of the time because of it.

SQUAD is (overall) definitely less casual since the latest updates (to SQUAD) compared to ArmA: Reforger.
There are elements of reforger that are not casual friendly. Such as the absence of live markers where you and your teammates are on the map.
But the overall gunplay and gameplay is.

The recoil system in ArmA is much better and therefore less clunky compared to squad. But everyone is also way tankier compared to squad. Next to that is the horrible netcode which lets you suck a lot of bullets as well as the enemy which results in a lot of dancing around each other while reloading. This usually gives time for other teammates to jump into the often +3 seconds long gunfights (from 5 meters distance) which is one of the greatest indicators that you have a casual game.

ArmA: Reforger is a true BI title. And BI took years to add a server queue into the ArmA series. Do not expect a lot of quality of life features which SQUAD had. Everything is usually a bit more complicated than it should be.

Squad is a one trick pony. Arma is what you make it. Literally if you can think it and have the skills to convey that in the editor. Anything is possible
