The pistol sight picture ( iron sights ) .
Righty lets dive in....

There is a strategy in pistol sighting: you can set your sights so the target sits on the sights. ( Normal head sized target, we are shooting heads today...)

Not the sights aligned with the centre of the target, or even over it. Below.

When you shoot this set up, the round will hit the target in the middle, at your chosen distance. ( If you get closer or move further away things happen but not much etc etc etc ) .

The sights will NOT be in the way of the target. You actually see your target OVER the sights. Much betterer. I can see you now.

So...
The Glock that I was fiddling with in Reforger are sighted in using a much different approach ( ARMA since the beginning has done this always...) :

The sights actually obscure the Point of Impact. ( in 3D computer graphics this is made worse...) The Glock sight with the three dots, is so finely tuned that the centres of the dots line up with the centre of target at reasonable range.
This is not optimal for fast combat shooting, and It's not even great for target shooting.
the huge blade with the dot on it is obscuring your target. Not ideal. No.

But wait : The obvious solution is to add a reflector sight and be done with it. sure. yes. correct. However... the stock pistol iron sights would be way more practical if they were the "target over sights" set up. Not the "target in line with the sights" set up. Right.

Anyone who has had to hold their own against the hordes of AI, real players etc at a reasonable distance generally find the stock Iron sights to be sighted in not so well. Like I did tonight. I did eye roll. Sigh. The old "can't see the target properly" issue.

Sum up: I can't imagine anyone gives a toss and BI are not going to change their "ideas" and who the frack am I to offer advice etc etc. But heck and darn I wish they would change the iron sights.

I got pretty good with the Glock back in the day but the sight picture always bugged me.

Ok I am done. Bye.

The aim of pistols in the real military world is a last weapon of desperation where they are more useful for making a very loud noise and getting your enemy to duck. With a few exceptions, the idea of calmly aiming any weapon and taking precise aim is a Hollywood fantasy. It's a blast fast and all about getting bullets out of the gun as fast as possible. Fascintaing fact.... in Afghanistan and Iraq there were 250,000 bullets fired for every insurgent killed, compared to 45,000 in WW2!

Hey, nice.

Sure. I am also sure a few enemies ended up being deleted by a well placed pistol shot AND or a very fast draw and shoot. Both would be enhanced with a better sighting strategy. No one said anything about being calm... also in confined spaces a pistol is superior. Ask a folding stock...
Ugh...

Lost a duel last night. Should have been easy but no.

Shooting with the iron sights at a reasonable distance. Aiming for the head. Trying to aim for the head means I had to cover their head with the sight blade. This means I can't see them. I had to continually raise and lower the gun. I know I can hit that target at that range. BUT i can't hit what I can't see... so trying to time shooting when they pop their head out... nope.
( yes this does make sense: I can hit a static target dead centre BUT I can't actually see it. )

Yes you can hit players at a distance with a pistol. It's a thing and it's real. BUT you can't hit them if your sight is in the way and they are moving / popping out etc.

IF the sight picture was of the "target over the sight" set up then I would have won that shoot out no issue. They had to pop out to shoot me and all I would have had to do is time the shot.

No sights would be better. Just file the things off.

Shooting up close and personal is much easier when the target is much wider than the sights, you just put the sight block in the middle of the target. When the target is smaller than the sights... it's fracking terrible. The pistols can reach out and they can hit players... but firing blind is less than ideal.

This is such a sad state of affairs. I like pistol shooting and Close Quarter Combat, but the sight picture is wrong. It's just bad.
