In Combat mode you start by yourself in a hideout. You have objectives like finding intel that must be kept and taken the extraction once you are done. You have to locate and destroy specific targets, usually a vehicle, take out an officer that is usually at a base with troops, etc. Also while dealing the AI. You do have the option of recruiting AI but you have to find their hidden camp first.
I have never played these directly from the "play" option in the game. I created my own dedicated server on a laptop and run the scenario on it. I leave it running so my progress is always there when I come back to continue where I left off. I also run Gramps303 PVE Mod that greatly increases the difficulty by adding the ability for the AI to recapture a base after you have taken it as well as adding a ton of additional capture locations.
The AI Squad are not perfect so be aware. Most of the time they do as instructed but they can be flaky. The game itself is not perfect and you sometime run into annoying bugs. That is another reason I run dedicated so I can login as Gamemaster to eliminate any bugs that might hold us up.
