Friendship, does quality matter?

Giving them expensive gifts that they like will give more friendship? Does it matter?
I know If you give someone fruit and they like bugs you only get 1 star, and If you give that bug you get 2 stars. but If I give a mote of mana I only get 2 stars so how does it work?

From my experience, item type, rarity, and zone matter. So ideally you should gift pure mana from the latest zone you have. Stars only show whether recipient likes the item type or not, everyone likes pure mana, so it's an easiest gift if you don't want to have a headache.

Keep in mind, if you're grinding for the last couple of relationship points before Day 50, one pure mana gift from the Magical Wasteland isn't going to cut it to the next relationship level, unlike prior mana gifts. You need two. Ended up with Corsac and Xid left out of the big happy relationship pool because of that.
