And even if it never happens, to me it’s still a good game so far due to a whole bunch of well-thought-out game design decisions.
In terms of whether the game will be positively reviewed or not, that's simply up to everyone. It's just as wrong to promote everyone to have to like a game, and the exact opposite.
The game not going in a direction that points towards Pricefield romantic bliss is merely the final nail in the coffin for that demographic.
This also changed a little bit when it came to the reasoning. A lot of people were against it at first because they didn't want anything having to do with LIS 1 be the next game, so seeing a LIS 1 sequel had a lot of alarm bells going off for people but for very different reasons, mainly that they were afraid that it would make LIS 1 worse.
Is a breakup an original idea? No. But I feel the little we've seen from Chloe's letter in the game justifies it a bit. She's always been an emotionally volatile character, whether or not she loves the person she's pushing away. I don't think the breakup is forever; there will be a reconciliation at the end to bring Max and Chloe together again, perhaps on a more mature path.
Honestly, they probably shouldn't have made another game with Max, but if that had to happen, Storytelling 101 dictates she needs to be missing something in her life and trying to get it back in this game. Everything can't be perfect the whole time or there is no character arc to experience, no journey of discovery. So far, the game appears to be planting seeds about ghosts of the past and dealing with an uncertain future. So of course Chloe has to be away for that to work. That doesn't mean she can't find what she's looking for, whether if it's with Chloe or someone else.
Personally, if I were in charge, I'd have put them at a crossroads in their relationship as they think about who they want to be as individuals and as a couple and have Max accept this residency while Chloe chooses to go be a roadie with a concert tour or something. While they're self-actualizing as human beings outside of the roles in their relationship, they could check in with each other over socials while Max is free to have her adventure. But that's me brainstorming about a game I don't know the destination of, so maybe it would work, maybe it wouldn't.
At any rate, I could be naive, but I really think people just need to take a deep breath and wait for the full game before getting out their pitchforks and torches. I love Max and Chloe together, and I want them to have a happy ending. Every relationship has the potential for speed bumps and detours. That doesn't invalidate anything that has come before or mean they still won't grow old together.
It's telling that the dominant topic of the early access period is people debating whether Deck9 made it bad out of malice or incompetence though. I don't recall seeing that happen on many good games.
You can't diss people's opinions or their arguments their gonna always come back with something my guy besides a game is always gonna have a side where someone will not like it, that's just it.
I honestly think if they just made it so that Chloe was still with Max, but out of state for some reason, like say, a mutual Friend's wedding, Max couldn't make it due to Work at the University, so Chloe went for the both of them and could update her on what is happening at the wedding with pics and a phone call that we only hear Max talking.......that is all they had to do and, i know i would be happy about it.
But sadly.....nope, they either didn't have the imagination to think of that or they just wanted Chloe gone.
