Side note, if Max and Steph ever meet, we BETTER be getting another Dungeons and Dragons inspired scene akin to the ones from Before The Storm.
It does seem like they will bring those two in the next game.
It is not about empathy, but about lived experience.
Alex has been betrayed by a parent, like Safi has. Max has not, she can give no real advice to Safi here. And Max being a white woman is a subtle point the game makes in a couple of cases.
Like it'd be fine if Alex read somewhere that ♥♥♥♥ happened near where Max is.
