Is it possible to download harmful files by joining a server?

In other words, is it "safe" to join any server, given the game is extremely old. I'm a bit worried about connecting to any other servers than the few official ones after they re-opened them.

Probably... but who knows.. i highly recommend you play on this servers: Team Muppets, F|A Recruiting, ETpro, ID Vanilla servers #1 they are safe and has good reputation in this game!

If you run the game through ETLegacy (so you can't join ETPro nor PunkBuster servers), there's some security enhancements done over the years regarding that matter

Open source project sounds good, most likely had some eyes on the code to check the security of the mod itself too. Thanks for posting this, sounds good.
