So if I go in for an investigation the first investigation any and all notes in the e-mail. The investigations after that... if I have archives or wiki available....I will use those in combination with the email. I will usually tailor my notes 3 for 1 ghost and 3 for another... or 4 for a difficult one and 2 for an easier ghost. EMF and temps can be achieved through any ghost it doesn't have to be the one you have focused on the notes if you don't know their travel paths well.
This being a simulator, it's much like the real deal... If things are quiet, leave and come back. Try different combinations of notes if the ones you picked didn't cause them to be active. Sometimes they're extremely active and other times they are not. There's a guide on steam somewhere by MRHA that may help and you can always ask about specific entities if you want help with them.
Also, I have the same experience as what Sparkiekong said: the more emf, thermo and audio you collect in a mission, the more active ghosts seem to get, regardless of whose you've collected. If you know where one ghost is all the time, get evidence off it and then search out your target ghost.
If your specific ghost you are looking for has a lot of related notes selected for the mission, and you've captured other evidence during the mission, you'll have a MUCH better chance of having it manifest for photos.
Lastly, it could be that you are having trouble spotting where the ghost is wandering. The laser pen should be pretty cheap to get, and is a good way to find a ghost as it turns from green to yellow when the ghost walks through it. It will let you know where to focus your efforts.
Edit: As for the XP grind... when there's a lot more maps I am sure that there will be a lot more XP to gain without needing to grind to get all the equipment.
Also, getting high XP for a given location (say, for the 500xp location achievements) will likely be easier when there's more reasons to keep going back, such as whenever the ritual stuff gets implemented.
I plan on resetting my progress once the game has all it's locations and equipment and rituals figured out. Will be a better gauge on the game flow after that's done.
