Dice rules difference between cannon and mortar
I have never played tabletop games before. I understand some range attacks have various attack damage dice rules. Can someone with tabletop experience kindly explain?

Thank you in advance

the diff is simple. canon rolls 1-2=1 hit 3-4=2 hits 5-6=3 hits sixsided dice but for every hit the unit that get shot loses 2 HP per hit so u can one shot i giant. mortar rolls a D6 and hits with strength 4 but only deals 1 damage. so canon for single target mortar for big units

np, keep in mind that spearthrowers also hit for 2 damage per model, so its an awesome cavkiller

Theoretically Cannon for big monsters, mortar for elite infantry, and bolties for cav. In practice, the way you level them up changes things.

You can add attacks to cannons too and make them crazy good.

Cannons can only oneshot giants in campaign after a few bonus hit upgrades, in MP it´s dealing 6 wounds at most and Giants pack 8. Still it´s dang effective

I had 330 or so kills with my dwarf cannon in my last campaign, thats about a third more than any other unit.

Generally, cannon is better for anything with more than a single wound (monsters, cavalry and artillery) as it hits automatically, has a high strength and does 2 wounds per point of damage.

Mortars/stonethrowers do more hits but only 1 wound per hit and at a lower strength so are better at infantry (particularly heavy infantry).

After a few upgrades though, both are good against literally everything. I strongly suspect that they will be nerfed, probably by limiting or removing the extra free hits that they can get.

Can I ask, how effective is Veteran Accuracy (reroll 1s) as an upgrade for cannon? I went for it instead of Veteran Crew (I think it add one more attack).

The extra attack adds more consistency as it will literally prevent you only having a single attack.

Re-rolling 1 is not a terrible upgrade but I would always prioritise extra attacks and you can get the re-roll from other sources like the Dwarf engineer.
