How do the stats work?
Yeah I read the SOVLRules, but it tells me almost nothing. Still, just like before - I see a unit with certain stats, and I have no idea what they mean, I can only estimate if it's strong, weak, or average.

which rules did you read? the ones I remember looking at were quite clear as to what the stats do:

I said SOVLRules, and there is clearly not enough information for anything other than roughly estimating if a unit is strong, weak or average

Power is damage, and defense decreases damage? Who would have thought... But you still have no idea by how much, which is an important information....
It's under Game Loop -> Combat Phase.

Each attack roll compares attackers skill vs defenders skill. If attackers skill is higher, a 3+ hits. Otherwise a 4+ hits.

Hits then compare Power vs Defense. This can range from 2+ to 6+ saves depending on the difference. Unsaved hits cause 1 wound unless otherwise stated.

Skill 3 / Power 3 / Defense 3 / Attacks 1 is the 'base' statline.

yeah I'm not sure what is going on but when I look at that page it's all printed quite clearly how the stats work.

I'd say they likely looked Unit Stats and Types, which doesn't include details on how the calculations are done, and didn't look any further.
