SOVL
Are the Dead Nations just garbage?
I figure they're like Vampire Counts from Warhammer, where the individual units are horrible but the characters make up for it. But the lack of characters (and cost of recruiting) means you end up with few units to do anything with and constantly having to replenish means your income isn't enough to buy new units

It's a vicious cycle, but I'm also very new to this game.

So I wanted a second opinion on the faction before I write them off entirely.

I don't like them, i wasn't able to complete the campaign with them and they are the only faction I haven't completed the campaign with. The final mission was against Dwarfs so it was a bad match up but even so.

I tried the Necromancer and their resurrection spells are too limited to keep your skeleton units effective and they don't work on Wights or Cavalry. Units in general have poor skill values so they don't perform well against just about anything in melee and their ranged options are very limited.

the problem is the backround of each army. i cant play an goboarmy because u dont get a big army, same goes for undead zombies are just useless roadblocks but u dont have hardhitting units. but my biggest prblem is that we only have def skill and not toughness plus armorvalue. every time i try to play a close combat list and run ito elves i lose way to much to their archerstacks

I don't think they are garbage, no. I'm a Warhammer undead player so I had to try them as my first campaign in SOVL and... I won. It was pretty easy :| But I had some good enhancements and random encounters filled some gaps.
Never running away is really powerful.

More people have won campaigns in SOVL than they have lost them.
The first campaign is a glorified tutorial.

They are one of the weaker factions, but they're not terrible.

The biggest issue is sustained attrition and forced replenishing gradually wearing them down and choking their income as stated above. With their low unit quality it wouldn't be unreasonable to just give them a free automatic replenishment after every battle.

Their spells to restore lost models could also be stronger considering you only get 2 casts per battle and Raise dead is limited to some of the worst units in the game.

Raise Dead should be 2d3+3 models of zombies/skeletons.
Reanimate should be 1d3+3

Wights could use something to make them stand out. Maybe give them Wight Blades - armor saves against Wight Blades are never better than 4+. Right now a souped up hero, cav charge with lances, or your -3 defense spell are the only effective way to deal with high defense units with their 2+ saves that somehow succeed 95% of the time. This would give them more options in the campaign where you're not guaranteed to get Dread Knights or power upgrades on your hero, and charges/spells only last for the first round.

The game is balanced with point costs in PVP mode. The campaign mechanics however heavily favour hight cost elite unit consequently making factions with more of them better and factions with multiple chaff units worse.

Frankly I just picked them as my first campaign and it was a walk in the park. Mostly since at a certain point I had 2 units of guards who could just say "no" to damage.

Their cavalry and abominations are pretty good - their infantry garbage -vampire knight on bone dragon and zombie giant - will carry you through campaign

i dont enjoy them because playing a slow brittle low damage army isnt very fun to me but they do work throught sheer weight of number... with the necromancer to get extra squelly and reanimations for higher grade units... the vampire and wraight lord dont really give anything special to an army that mostly made of chaft

They could have at least one strenght... but staying in the fight is uselesss if ennemies kill 10 squelly /zombie per turn and you struggle to deal more than 1-2 damages per turn. then take extra attrition...
basic squelly being -1 skill power def and movement
also why are wolves unit cav sized but have basic unarmed human stats block?

wight guard and vampire cav are good the rest is very bad... also no multy damages or very high power/defence unit do hurt the roster feel a bit like playing skaven with no special units like slave spam it work but damn it can feel horrible

The campaign for them could benefit from the trash units like zombies coming in doubles like some of the artillery when you pick them. A single zombie squad is a just a terrible pick, but 2x zombie could be interesting.

It might also be interesting for zombies to refill casualties when they kill, that might give them a niche that isn't much, much better filled by spear skellies.

simply undead recovering more units at the end of every battle would help a lot.

So I finally won, and it was all about starting with fast units like fell bats, those early battle flanking attacks set me up for the long game.

I did fine with them, but it's really about using the right units for the right job.
