Which one of these is the best one to get?

I'm considering maybe getting one of these games but not sure which one would be best.

If you plan to play the whole series eventually (and I recommend you do) best to start with 1 and move forward as they definitely improve as the series goes along. By the same logic, if you just want the best of the three here, 3 is probably your best bet.

Three is easily the best, just in the franchise on the whole.

Do these games have a continuous story through all 3 games? Or are they basically unconnected?

You should get 3 if you can only get one of them. You don't need to play 1 or 2 to enjoy 3 they are not connected in that kind of way.

They take place in the same overall world, and they do move forward chronologically but generally all follow different groups in different places. 2 lets you port over data from 1 to imply that it's the same guild from 1 adventuring in 2, and depending on your progress in 1 implies some of the consequences of the story, but otherwise each game can be enjoyed as a standalone without knowledge of the rest of the franchise.

3 is definitely the best game in this collection and one of the best in the entire franchise. All etrian odyssey games are standalone adventures and don't have much to do with one another, so you can just play 3 if you only have time for one.
