Miss opportunity to fix franchise's name
Etrian is the town from this (1st) game..... and that's the story why this franchise is called Etrian in English.

In Japan is Yggdrasil Labyrinth (World Tree Labyrinth) that is more fitting.

You say that "Etria" is the name of the town from the first game, and that the game is named after that, but then, the question just becomes "what does 'Etria' mean?"

The final boss of that game is called "Etreant". Which might be a portmanteau of the town's name and the ancient tree monster. So, "Etrian" is just an adjective for "monster tree". Although, I did some etymological digging, and it turns out that the root of THAT word is just "giant" ("ent"). So, I don't really know, but, at the same time, I don't think it's just the name of a town. What is the town's name in Japanese? That might give some more clues, especially considering that Japanese is spelled as a phonetic language... there's no difference between "Etria" and "Etrea" there.

I can't find anything clear sadly.

Here is the wiki FULL OF SPOILER

Link
https://etrian.fandom.com/wiki/Etreant

and even there, trivial sections, is says:

Etreant's name is likely a play on the words Etrian and Treant, which is a fictional walking tree originating from Dungeons & Dragons.

As much as I love english game titles being a more direct translation of the japan title, having decent Search Engine Optimization in a name is a must. Even in matters unrelated to search engines, it's pretty important. So this is a matter I'm not too concerned about if it means the game can sell better by sticking in people's minds and is easy to search up.
