Gunner is part of the meta Gunner/DH/Hexer trio who allow you to not bother with medic and use war magus solely for his buff to bump your main phys damager, optimally a ronin+gunner.
Gunner not only has force generation weapon but also has a guaranteed 1 turn disable which works on everything aside of 2 random enemies. Yes, even against postgame boss.
This allows you to be immortal on 1st turn which subsequently allows your DH, who also has force weapon to disable enemy for another ¬2-3 turns after that depending on RNG.
At the same time the Hexer is massacring with damage of over 2k per turn.
With this party not only you wipe random encounters at essentially among fastest possible speeds but also wipe all bosses aside of postgame one before they can even move. And even though postgame one does get to move- it dies before it can do anything serious.
Generally all the classes that were meh to ♥♥♥♥ in original are top tier and vice versa the overpowered ones are now meh to okay.
Ronin/Knecht used the UNO to reverse how garbage one is compared to the other.
Albeit Ronin had SOME use in EO1.. for example he was a slightly better boss damager if you actually did bother with remaking one midway into the game, especially if you got the strongest katana which HAD use in EO1 since you could easily get it way before you finished grinding everything.
Knecht in EO2 is now just garbage.
Survivalist is now poor man's Gunner.
Gunner not only gives you an easy way to get all fire/ice/thunder conditionals in the game but is also a monster who can disable any boss for 1 turn with force + do highest possible ranged damage if we are not counting the hexer.
Which means the only incentive to use alchemist is now gone... and this conditional drop QoL was the only reason you probably used alchemist in EO1 if you even used one instead of troubadour.
Medic is now poor man's War Magus. Why would you need to get more heal in a game where bosses never get to move when War Magus is already more than enough for random encounter healing AND can do massive damage buff + actually deal damage on boss fights is beyond me.
Protector who was mandatory in EO 1 if only for his Anti skills is now garbage because you can remove the need for using those by simply killing enemy before it can move.
He does have top tier force move.... BUT DH+Gunner kinda remove the need for it.
DH/Hexer used to be meh and are now godlike.
Well = Any Party which can beat the Game without much trouble. I not gonna use a optimal Party unless on accident, i use the party i want to use. of course if things don't work out at all, members must be changed but R,WM,R,M,G works.
As in - X party would be better at Y but worse at Z. While W party would be worse at Y but better at Z.
As is however - there are classes which are simply outright better and classes which are outright worse... and it's not even by a small degree.... it's a gap as wide as heaven and earth.
Unless you plan to use multiple of same class(stacking 4 hexers + gunner or something like 3 hexers + gunner + DH) - I would say there is one party which is simply multifold better than using any other combination of classes...
Which is the case with ronin/DH/war magus front and gunner/hexer back
Speaking about the Game flopping hard, did you guys know that if you write Etr in the Search Bar, the 5 results shown are : the first game, the third game and 3 DLC for some Train Game xD.
A few Days prior it was even funnier because doing the above reuslted in the following Result :
First Game
the Third Game
Train DLC
Train DLC
the second Game. <---- clearly not as important as two DLCS for a Train Game :D.
Of course depending on your Region/Country you might get a different Result.
Landsknecht can be good but there's only one type of party it works well in. Chaser parties. If you don't build around those then yeah their damage is crap. Otherwise they're actually pretty strong.
The incentive to use Alchemist is to utterly destroy the main-game. Their damage is only rivaled by Revenge Hexers because of how odd spell scaling works in 2. Alchemist's actual issue is that they're kind of clunky to use, since you'll either have to hold off on skill levels to avoid draining their TP, or give them an Amrita addiction. Which makes them annoying to use but in terms of actual power and use case, they can do a lot. Yes they're crap in post-game, though if you don't plan on tackling that this weak point is irrelevant.
Medic is indeed meh.
Protector is not crap, especially in this version where Provoke got buffed! It pairs up super nicely with Beast to form an amazing offensive and defensive core. Smite is frankly amazing damage, and Protector in 2 is a very flexible unit.
Survivalist is just irredeemable though, unless you're speedrunning in which case Stalker is OP as heck because of the sheer time save.
What is so meh about them? Their Job is to heal and revive and that the do. Sure the are no longer Medic/Protector before sub classing even was a thing without Imunize, BUT that Skill was busted.
I mean i used both Medic and Magus in my Team and when i considered removing one of them for more DPR against the Draons. i struggled with who needs to go. Mostly because both classes are strong in some aspects, where the other class is slightly weaker.
End result by the way was, that i keeped them both.
You basically just spam Salve 3 as a form of proactive healing because that's all they can really do (though if you have a Hexer with Leaden they can be faster than the enemy to do reactive healing.)
They're not a terrible class, but compared to some of the other things in the game (and with battles being much faster than in 1, offense has the bigger edge here) they're pretty lacking.
The Beast Class in the HD is still using the old version of Loyalty (which makes it barely usable)
It fills a niche for Completionists (since there's a different accessory you get if you carry over a 100% Save Password from EO1,
Other people have already mentioned the major stuff but I was waiting for the trio to go on sale so i've only begun playing the game (and started with 1 right now before replaying/restarting on 2 again)
So its really difficult to sale anyone on 1 and 2. Etrian Odyssey 3 pretty much vastly improves 99% of the problems present in 1 and 2, overall EO3 is definitely worth the buy.
